Hi all, I'm just looking for some input for a sound problem in the garage. I have a raised ranch with the garage under the master and 2nd bedrooms. I haven't made any inspection holes to see what kind of insulation is in there yet. I am already guessing that the ceiling is gonna have to come down (bummer). What type of things should I do while the ceiling is down and what should I use for soundproofing?special insulation? special drywall? I could google it but If you guys have experience with any products any input is appreciated.

A true sound proof design is to simply add another wall/ceiling.
The studs/joists should be off set and not touching the previous wall/ceiling.
This allows the sound to basicly fall out and not be transferred to the main section.
You should not have to tear down the ceiling this unless there is no insulation or. Apor barrier. Simply use some 2x4's off set and about an inch from the existing ceiling. You will have to us some straps to support the load span, sheet rock, and the new insulation.

Screw resilient channel to the ceiling & then add a layer of 5/8" drywall to it, RC should be avail at a drywall supplier.... If you were close I would give you some, been sitting around for years & is prob. going to the scrapyard.

Quiet rock.....thick drywall that provides about 78+ decibels of sound attenuation hung on its own structure like akdeisel recommended. Google it up.

great ideas, my celiling is already low so I really dont want to lose any more head room and I have a suspicion there is no vapor barrier. When the kid goes for a nap I'll go open up a spot

When I built our laundry room I wanted it to be soundproof as much as I can. I use insulation on the interior wall on put this Quiet Brace up on the inside wall. Then I took some drywall putty and put a skim coat on it, sanded it, then painted it. Look fine.

So now when the door is shut, we can hardly here the washer! Works awsome:thumbup:
The only down fall is that, I make muiltiable trips to the laundry room because I can't tell when the washer is done.

Quiet Brace at Home Depot:
