Morning!

So our local pro football team got a new $220mil stadium this year and the old one is being torn down so they sold off all the seats etc. I aquired the benches seen here as they were my season ticket row for 10+ years so im planning on making smaller 5 person benches out of them and stripping and repainting etc. My question is what would look good as legs for them as you can see they were just seats bolted to concrete steps. I dont wanna get all elaborate just keep it a bit simple. Anyone ever take on a project like this?

Got a MIG welder? I'd weld up some 2" angle into a trapezoid shape sections and space accordingly.
But I would never refinish those. That's the history of the bench you are removing. I'd paint the new bases in a wear pattern to match and leave out in the weather to rust a little to blend with the rest of the bench before attaching.

I would love to leave them as is but the paint is pretty haggard after 50 years and probly 10 repaints its pretty flakey and jagged. I want to be able to sit on them and let my daughter sit on them. Maybe a few heavy coats of clear over top as is to seal it up a bit. Ill post closer pics in a bit here.

Good idea on the legs though. Prob the route ill go i have a mig

Actually not a bad idea. 1 section is getting cut up into smaller pieces. A friends wants her seats so a 4 seat section is coming off one bench and i will use 5 seat section for my deck bench

Weld up a base as mentioned; put a clear coat over a red rust colored primer, with a blotchy paint job to match the seats.
Clear coat existing seat finish.

Sort of a preservation.

Those ARE rough! If I was going to repaint them to use them as benches, I'd also replace the wood. Keep the rough wood and create a 'memory wall' in the garage or house.

Use new wood and paint for the new seats.

If you want them permanently mounted, a single 2x4 square tube with a base plate, welded to the framework, with holes to bolt them to the concrete or deck.

You could build a fire-pit, surrounded by short retaining wall and mount them the way they were intended, on the retaining wall.

Freestanding...use a metal shape similar to the metal framing on the parts and make sure you use some sort of triangulation to make them steady. You also need to think about end-to-end stability...something they didn't have to worry about, when fastening to big block of concrete.

You could also make an upside down "U" shape out of heavy tubing (a free-standing, heavy base) and bolt the seats to that.

MAKE SURE you closely photograph the numbers, before you paint the new benches. Take the photos to your sign/vinyl lettering shop, who will be able to create a 'reverse mask' for you to paint the new number in exactly the same font as the old one.

There is no way I'd repaint those old boards...I'd build new for actual use and use the old boards as 'art.'

Here are a couple of sketches...

Kev

How about getting a few sets of the cast iron benches meant to be put outside. You probably can find them in lawn & garden centers. Paint them whatever color.
