Ideas for storing 3 transmissions...

I have three 727 Torqueflite transmissions in my garage. Currently they are taking up valuable floor space. The only solution I can come up with is to buy some shelving and store them stacked and try to store other other parts on the shelves strategically around them to maximize the space. My garage is 20' wide by 22' deep with only 7' high ceilings at highest points. I do keep two cars in there and have a lot of other stuff to store also. I'm actually in the process of re arranging the garage in general and this has been the biggest hurdle so far.

For reference I believe they each weigh in the neighborhood of 125-150 lbs each.

I also have a built 440 that is on an engine stand. My idea for it was to somehow incorporate it into the shelving by rolling the legs under the bottom shelf and spacing the middle shelves into accommodate the engine to fit also. Not sure if I'm describing that correctly?

Can you store them outside? Buy a cheap garden storage shed, wrap the ******'s in heavy duty plastic and store them in the shed. Would be a good spot to store "garden tools" also to keep them out of the garage...

Thanks for the replies. I do have a shed currently where I keep yard tools. Unfortunately there isn't enough room in it for for them.

I had thought of building crates out of reclaimed pallet wood, as I have access to as many free palletts as I want. Then I got to thinking about something I read somewhere about the chemicals they use to treat pallet wood and wasn't sure if it would be a good idea to be cutting up pallets and building with them and then keeping them in the garage. Then I told myself I'm probably just being paranoid and it would probably be just fine.

I think you shouldn't have any issue with the pallet wood unless you burn it.
PS: You have too much stuff, people will be along shortly to offer to take it off your hands if it's in the way.

I stored my TF904's horizontally in pallet wood boxes. They were wrapped in plastic, drained of ATF and all inputs were plugged. I installed plastic plugs in the input/output ATF hydraulic lines and the Dipstick tube as well as the breather hole behind the converter.

I put Vaseline on the input and converter shafts and wrapped them in plastic.

You want to keep it in a dry and if possible a low humidly place. The converters were stored flat, full of ATF and plugged.

I stored 2 auto trans for a couple of years. tilted them up on bellhousing end on a small roller cart. (actuallly a plant dolly!) takes up little space, easy to roll around out of the way. Can't say if an active trans could be safely stored this way due to fluids, but mine were builders so it worked great. Also threw a trash bag over it. very simple.

This was my initial plan and I have purchased the 1,000 lb rated movers dollys from HF. I tilted one on the bellhousing and you guessed it, ATF clean up on isle garage please! All three trans will be rebuilt and gone thru as I've never had them in a car and don't have an idea on the condition, so I thought about just drai Ming them and storing them on the dollys.

Have I mentioned I tend to over think things?

Never heard of pallet wood being treated with chemicals. I have burned thousands of them and they seem no different than burning any other scrap wood.

Sounds like you have limited storage space and no immediate plans to put them in use. And handling them is already creating problems (more to follow). I'd suggest - sell "as is" or scrap.

These things are getting scarcer by the day - a decent core (for parts only) C4 here is running $200+. If you're a Mopar guy, you better keep them or be real sorry in the pocket some day.

Take those mover dollies and put a piece of 3/4 ply on top to hold the trans.

This is the reason I'm keeping them. One will be built and put in my '70 Cuda when it's ready, that's what the built 440 will be going in also. I'm going to build some crates and stack them. Thanks guys, love this forum!

Doesn't help reduce floor space at all but this is also what I have done with transmissions, blocks, wheels/tires... The HF furniture dollies are perfect for that sorta thing so that you can cram them up against other things and into tight spaces but just slide them out of the way easily if you need access to things.

Pallet racking is a good way to store all your heavy stuff. You can usually fit a couple blocks or trannys deep on normal stuff.

That said I sold all my spare blocks and stuff. too much space taken and a pain if you have to move them. Have a couple axle housing and gears left but that is it.

You already found the one pitfall with transmissions. ATF seems to never go away. I had my c-6 carried up to the attic while I was under restoration of the stang and 4 years later the darn thing seemed to double in weight. They are awkward heavy even when you don't have oil in them.

I have a spare 428 block and heads on a HF stand and made a wood platform under it that stored the ****** not sure if that will help but at least keeps things close to eacher until the proper "Match" can be made...

Yes, and I thought about doing that also, but wasn't sure I wanted to start with all that mess.

I will be going with pallet racking. but for right now I have an MB trans sitting on a smaller version of a moving dolly that I got from HD. I also have an MB engine sitting on a standard moving dolly. They are still on the floor but at least they can roll out of the way.

I'm finding that if I want to get used pallet racks they are very hard to find under 36". So I will probably get 3 30" uprights and look into used cross bars.

Pallets can be treated with methyl bromide, chromated copper arsenate or a number of other treatments to prevent mould.
Phased out in many countries but you know where they end up? in backyards.

I have the same problem, auto trans are awkward to store. I just have mine on floor under pallet racks, kind of alternated bellhousing to tail so they nest closer together.

If you can build nice crates that would work good, and be able to stack them. No matter what those 727 have long tailshafts.

If you have any driveshaft yokes weld them to an old wheel and stand the transmission up

Unless they are treated for overseas shipment most pallets are just plain old wood, at least the ones I have bought over 35 years as a Purchasing Managefr

What about a gang box? I had a couple when I didn't have space and kept a 22r and parts for a 327 I was saving for later, of course it rarely rains here but they were all fine after 2 years in storage

I thought only the old style cast iron TF's had a removable bell housing. I'm pretty sure I had to cut the bell housing off of a 727 once to install an Ultrabell.

the bell housing is not, you are correct, I was thinking tail shaft.

I have three trans just sitting on top of a used oak footlocker. I put wheels under the footlocker and the whole thing rolls under the landing for my split foyer house. Works pretty slick... the footlocker's two big drawers are filled with turbos
