Ideas for work bench along back wall?

So I think I'm going to extend my workbench all the way down the wall, removing the craftsman floor cabinet and only have the two toolboxes and one a workbench along the back wall. I'll sell the floor cabinet and replace it with some hanging wall cabinets above the bench. Looking for some opinions or additional ideas. I think it would look better and give me slightly more room. I need another shelf too, so I'll add that under the bench.

I'm fixing to start my own bench, 16 ft long by 2ft deep with 6ft long x 32in tall peg board behind it. It looks like you get into more metal work than wood work but if you do indeed have a miter saw it would be worth building a table that took advantage of it with an extra long fence ect. It would also be easy to install drawers with fixed casters that go underneath the bench that could store heavier bulkier items. I'm curious to see what you end up doing.

Good luck

I think ill be adding a big back bench as well. I just continue the wood benches on the other side of the boxes and remove table and cabnet. Put casters on the table and add it to make a corner wrap around type bench on one of the two sides.

Very nice looking shop. I'm jealous

My only advice is go slow on big "selling" decisions. I've sold some stuff that later I wished I had.

my garage is only 14x20, but I have a 13'x2' bench down the one side. I love it. When I work on a project I can spread all of the tools across it and still have area to work on. that family handyman website also has a nice set of plans for wall cabinets. you could build them fairly cheap along that entire wall and have plenty of storage. that is the other benefit of a long bench, all the cabinets above it.

On one side of my garage I have about 18' of workbench/shelving with a drop section for my chop saw in the center. I also added some racks to store my steel above it.

On the other side I have a 11' workbench, where I do most of my work. I opted not to include any shelving on this bench, since they just attract clutter. I try to keep this area clean, or at least avoid using it for storage.

I have a HF wall cabinet above it, and I recently bought another which I still need to put up on the other side of the TV. I really like how shallow they are, you can't pile loads of junk inside of them.

I really like having 2 work bench areas. One being more for parts storage and the other for assembly and layout work. I find it much easier to keep the workbench without shelving clean, since I store everything on the other side of the garage.

Just an observation from bein in the building biz 40 or so years.Having built way too many shops/garages....yadayada.

Most shops....and those persons involved with designing/organising/building them "think" in the, wait for it......................................horizantal plane.Theres probably some deep seated psycho babble bullchit involved with that, which escapes this old shopdawgs vocabulary. But its true, even a roll-around toolchest is working or using up horizantal space.Start thinking vertical........and do it from the get-go!

Look at an old,guv-style file cabinet.Its a very efficient use of....vertical space.Just sayin....as an observation,that folks are way under-utilizing vertical space.Best of luck,BW

BWS - said differently - think cubic feet.

brett3xx - put the metal bench on casters and use it for welding/grinding. will keep the sparks away from your other bench and tool chests.

Mike_C - I have been planning on building a metal rack similar to what you have over your bench. Could you post some closer pics of yours and some measurements.

Haha I use that table more than anything, I couldnt manage without it, Id like to add a grated section to it and use it for torching. Any ideas on the best way to add casters to it and it still be stable, Id like it to be easily moved around if need be.

I built this bench a little while ago. If you scroll down towards the bottom of the thread you will see the retractable feet I made to keep it stable. It was a little bit of work, but I have found it was well worth it.

Here's an idea you may or may not find useful. When I built a workbench along the back wall I wanted it to be clear space underneath for the storage of bulky items on dollies, like spare motors and transmissions. I used metal brackets to cantilever it off the wall and it has worked out well. I used some junk metal I had around to make the brackets and a frame, it's all one inch square tubing.

This isn't the greatest picture, but you get the idea.

Just built this bench this weekend...the plans are linked in an earlier post on this thread. Don't be to harsh on my ego this is my first wood project since high school "about 10 years" I want to ask you guys do you think I need the 8 foot fence for.the miter saw or do you guys think I could cut it down to 4 and be alright?

To the OP hope these pics help you decide what you want to do.

Good Luck
