I have a 24x24 older garage and I want to insulate the ceiling. Or the main idea is to shut off the draft form the ceiling. This is a budget project. Ceiling than the walls later. The problem with the ceiling is there is only three rafters that are 6 feet apart. I don't want to waste any material. If it was 8 foot or 4 foot .Just got me bewilder Thanks for any help.

you might use metal roofing, here in TN you can get it in almost any length and the price is not much more than OSB and no waste...then blow in insulation. I think white metal was a tad over $300 for my 24x24 - I am saving up to do it after the first of the year, if all goes well.

I can do 6' by myself, does not need painting (does come in colors though).

Don't forget to put in soffitt vents before you do all the ceiling. There are a couple of posts here on using metal.

Price your materials to completely insulate, Sheetrock and finish the garage. Then get an estimate from someone local throwing rock up in new subdivisions or look in the phone book. You may find that the "professionals" can do it cheaper than you can...

And yes, rock does come in 12' lengths...

If your trusses or rafters are only 6' apart and you only have three, that is only 18'. So you have to include the end trusses which would make it 24'.

If you want to close off the ceiling for the time being, visqueen will work if you are on a strict budget.

If I were you, I would look at putting some ceiling joist in at predetermined intervals, then add your drywall onto the bottom trusses and/or the now new ceiling joist.

Just go white steel...factor in time and materials if you drywall...adding 2x's, mudding, primer/paint etc.
At 6' spacing you can go with the less expensive steel.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but for you guys with white steel ceilings, what do you do to hide or finish the seams and edges?

Pics?

kd3pc,I did think abut metal, I can do it and my son will help when he is not working. but maybe$100 or so at a time.Kevin I was planning on adding 2x4's. something to nail or screw to. I did not include the two ends. This garage was built on the cheep by the previous owner in the 70's,I was not sure how long visgueen would last. 4 mil? Maybe visqueen on part and something else till more money saved. Thanks so much.

Nothing, just overlap.

I live in south Texas where we get 110 in the summer and 20 in the winter. I put this stuff in my house attic, my shed and above my garage. I just laid it out over the insulation in the attic because i wanted the added benefit during winter of keeping the heat in the house instead of transferring up into the attic. The shed used to get over 100+ degrees in full sun before the foil. It is now about 20 degrees cooler in the same summer sun. Our summer electrical bill went from $200 a month to about $120. I can now heat my garage with a cigarette lighter because the heat stays below the ceiling. Im kidding but my usual heater used to run continuously but now will shut off for long periods of time. BEST thing I have ever done as far as home improvement and I did house, shed and garage for less than $240. I love the stuff. Lots of great information explaining why sometimes more insulation is not the best option.
