Keep an eye out for the Craftsman Professional module sets (they're not super large, not sure what sizes you need), the USA made ones, they have been going on sale every so often for half price, just saw them on sale two weeks ago. If you need bigger try flea bay, the flea market, etc., saw some great deals on large K-D USA made wrenches at the flea market and they were new.

Regular Cman raised panel wrenches offer excellent bang for the buck. They aren't anything fancy or expensive, but they hold up well and are easy on the wallet.

keep an eye on the pawn shops for proto and wright. For the really big stuff. There are more used form the industrial tool brands.

Craftsman pros modular are pretty much the same as the armstrong. Good quality. And they had them on sale from time to time at sears for 50 dollars each set.

If you are okay with import, the westward ones are pretty good as well. Made in tai want. not as fancy but works well. And allot cheaper at pawn shops or ebay.

You can go bigger with Cman RP. I believe they go to at least 1.5" and 32mm. Of course, they only cover the common sizes when you get up that large.

Napa has up to 1.5" on their 70% off deal. Though still not easy on the pocket at nearly $30/ea

I have bought two sets of large wrenches from my local pawn shops. They were Proto and Wright. They were also very reasonably priced and in excellent condition.

Check out Northern Tool. They have up to 2" or bigger and were pretty cheap. A 1-1/2" wrench for $16. 32mm for $8, etc...

Think all the northern wrenches are made in india. With imported asian wrenches go with made in taiwan over india.

OP asked for large wrenches that won't kill the pocket book. NT's fit the bill perfectly IMO.

With sizes that big, there is slim to no chance of breaking one when used properly.

But I do agree, Taiwan is the best Asian country for tools...

They wont break, but they will bend and the open end will spread more. When dealing with say 30-32mm you are dealing with high torque to lock down an fastener.

the chinese craftsman are pretty decent as well, china has gotten allot better at making good tools, slowly catching taiwan and japan. The high end in asia.

false. while they may carry some raised panels from india(not even sure of that) i have handled the northern wrenches in store. many of the sets and singles actually have the danaher branding on the package. i beleive taiwan are the most likely points of mfg. i would put much of thier wrench line on par with gearwrench and highly suspect that division is in charge of much of the wrench production for northern. i think they would fit the bill perfectly for the op's needs.

Go to a Sears outlet store. Craftsman Industrial 50% off. They have sets as large as 14pc.

Those sets are generally not in the "large" size category that the OP is looking for. 32mm+ and 1-5/16+ sizes are considered the "large" sizes and the Craftsman Industrial sets at the outlets are nowhere near those sizes

I had email northern about a wrench a while back. They reply with made in india. But that was about a year ago.

IMO once you get over 1 1/4" its time to get some box end tubular wrenches that you can get handles to give more torque. Yes they are expensive new but pawn shops have them sometimes--check eBay. Snap-on, Wright, Williams make the best--don't know what import tool mfg. has them.

When I get in the pawn shop mode I seem to find what I think are huge box end wrenches. No idea why I always seem to find them. Good name brands. I don't have any need for them so I don't buy them.

I'm not sure if they walk off jobs and get pawned but I find them more than any other type of wrench.

I suggest you shop pawn shops by highway construction projects.

Are you open to the idea of having harbor freight tools? A co-worker of mine has two large sets that are about 40 dollars a set. He did complain that on one of them, he had to grind/file the opening up a bit.

Most of my big wrenches (1½"-2½") are Proto, and I love them dearly, but easy on the wallet they are not.

I keep a set of Harbor Freight "Jumbo" wrenches on hand as backups (and for backing up the spline drive) and have never had a complaint with them. For less than $50 a set, you can't go wrong. We've put them through all sorts of abuses and other than tearing up the chrome, they've done admirably well.
