Have a 16x20 outbuilding that has a gravel ramp up.to the garage door.

It works fine other than the gravel is tracked into the shed.

Trying to come up with something to top coat the gravel to so it stays in place.

Hmmm...I had a guy place some "gravel" leading into a garage I moved. Might be fine to build on but anytime I drive a tractor (old Ford N) on it, I'm digging trenches.

Interested to see what other responses are.

My plan was to pour out a few bags of portland on it?

If it is 1" and down sized gravel, you will never get it to stay put. You need to have the top coat be a packed layer of crush'n run or whatever they call it in your area that has lots of fines. Then you can dust the top with portland cement and mist it with water. It will help for awhile but will eventually start to move around again.

What about mixing some of that sand that is used for locking the pavers!

1 inch minus with a lot of fines is what I'd ask for from the quarry (Crush-n-run, crusher run, or quarry screenings) to do it from scratch. Since you already have loose gravel there I'd just add the fines until it packs and firms up. temporary, as mentioned, but will work for a year or two...depending. I would look into using lime to firm it up and if a budget can be made larger...chip and seal or asphalt, given concrete is out of the budget.

^^ yep. We put crusher fines down and that stuff comes in the house if anyone not diligently scrubbing shoes off.

Obviously concrete is the most correct answer but if you want to do it on the cheap use asphalt.

I’ve have 1/4 down limestone driveway that tracks into the shop and patio all the time. Was thinking of trying to put down asphalt sealer to try hold it down a bit as it’s relatively cheap. Anyone tried that ?

Our driveway is paved but we do have a gravel turnout for parking trailers that is pretty high on the downhill side. We dusted it with concrete and watered everything down. Has not moved or needed anything for the last 5 years.
Apparently it's an old Florida trick.

Anything with fines in it will be tracked in.

Typically clean #8's or clean 57's wont track.

An 4" apron in front of the door using recycled asphalt will pack down nicely and keep the majority of the gravel out.

The sealing guy laughed at me when I asked them to do it when they sealed my driveway. Said it'd just make a big mess.

Ayuh,..... Pee'in into the wind comes to mind,.....

For inexpensive, a couple inches of blacktop millin's, 'n pounded in with a plate tamper, 'n a few days of hot sun, will stabilize, 'n firm up the area,....

Spraying asphalt sealer, or asphalt binder, is a standard practice along ALL roadways in Ky. Its purpose is to, get this, keep the rock along the roadway in place... Otherwise runoff would eventually wash the rock away and the edge of the road would break away.

The sealer most companies use would probably be too thin.
