Take a file to it, see if its brass. I'm not saying it isn't, but somethings looks a little off. Non-sparking tools are a big deal in some environments.

ALL: not sure what it's made of, but if it's beryllium copper you wouldn't want to be filing or grinding on it because the dust is TOXIC.

the government had a lot of tools made for non sparking type situations, but this looks fairly old so maybe coal mines and probably brass or bronze. or was it just steel and painted?

Kinda looks like Beryllium in the picture. Intended for non-sparking environments.
Yeah, the metal is toxic, (but TOXIC???) but scratching it to see if it is just paint isn't going to hurt you. Remember, those tools were used as tools at one time, and people survived.

AL: BECU dust wont kill you or give you cancer the next day, but it will eventually. just like saying smoking won't kill you if you have one or two. sure a little scratch or grinding one or two tools probably won't shorten anybody's life, but my friends didn't have a clue they were grinding BECU daily and they are not around any longer and cause of death was the standard CANCER which covers just about anything they don't know what the cause really was.

once they figure out the cause of Alzeimer's, cancer and other diseases your live for today attitude might have a different outlook, but sadly the way they are going that discovery won't happen while we are alive.

I wasn't suggesting going nuts on it, simply using a nail to scratch to see if it was painted.
ANY metal is a bad thing to ingest/inhale. When they were making the Wizard of Oz, the first Tin Woodsman almost died due to the powdered aluminum makeup.
As far as discovering a cancer cure, there's more money to be had in treatment than curing...
Draw your own conclusions.

AL: I know not curing is a better payday for those trying to cure it. there probably is some earb out there you can eat and make it go away, but it's only $.25 so not a profit maker.

funny you mention the Tin Man cause i recall that just vaguely. didn't the girl in Goldfinger that was painted gold actually DIE?

That is an urban myth.
Shirley Eaton is still alive and IMHO, still looking great! (She turns 80 this week)

But you are absolutely right about the dangers of Beryllium dust.

The power station I worked at issued brass/ bronze/BECU tools for use in the hydrogen plant. Somehow ended up with a nice little 16 oz.
Could this club have come from a gas plant of some sort?
