So, I was heading home from work one day and saw a tool box for sale sitting in a front yard with a sign on it for $50. I slow down as I go by and see a Snap-On emblem on the upper right hand side, and say to my self "no way thats legit."

Keep on driving about half a mile and think I better go and just take a look at it anyway, $50 isn't a bad starting point and it didn't look in too rough of a shape.

Long story short, I offered the guy $40. We both struggled like hell to get it in the back of my truck!

Its gotta weight every bit of 300 pounds.

Any ideas on year or model? Is it even really a Snap-On box?

As you can see there are no stickers or stamping anywhere on it, though I haven't checked the bottom and don't think I feel like wrestling it to get it on its side!

The drawers are old style slides, no bearings, and the very bottom left drawer has a broken spot weld on it top right side where the drawer face meets the drawer side. Other than that it is in pretty good shape, no dents, very little rust, etc.

What do y'all think?!

First off welcome to GJ

You were correct, that is not a snap on box. It is a craftsman (waterloo made) tool box. No where near the quality of a real SO box.

Either which way it was a great deal for that box especially for $50.

So Waterloo used that style of handle too? The handle screams SPG International to me.

Thanks for the welcoming! I have been lurking for quite a while. Some great advice and interesting conversation thought the past few years here.

Too bad it isn't a real Snap-On. But for $40 It will still do what it was designed to do.

As it is now I have a stainless top/bottom setup I got for father's day a year or two ago:

I was thinking about cleaning it up and maybe painting it. Anyone know what color paint, matching through the pantone color system, a standard red Craftsman box would use?

At work we use Sherwin-Williams industrial and marine stuff and it does a bang up job. I have a pretty good business relationship with the local store, and so I would probably use their products.

Look on the bottom front rail (red part) it should be stamped with the manufacture date and COO.

C'man 40 in. dual bank ya got there.

Good price for it .

That's why slapping Snap-On logo and badges on things gets even the normal CL seller and buyer all confusededed. LOL

Uhhh...Pantone is a printing and ink based color system. You might want to check the local rattle can stores like Pep Boys and others and see what they carry in Krylon, Duplicocor and some of the OEM touch up spray brands and use that as a base or pick up a Sherwin Williams industrial book or fan deck and just pick to match .

I'm sure a match is out there but trying to do a Pantone 186C to match is futile.
I have to tell graphic girls that all the time for wall paints, spray paints and most things that do not come out of a printer or press.

You may want to tell that to Lowes, they have a Pantone Universe for paint.

It's fine if you don't work in the printing or graphic industry.
In it's true intended usaage, it just makes the uneducated assume that a non-std. coloring system is now the standard when it is not.

Ask the shopper what Pantone CYMK means and you get the stare. That says it all.

It's also because they don't give fan decks and full paint swatch books to every joe-shmoe that walks into the place.

I personally don't care, but it's like bringing a menu from Steak and Shake into Wendy's and asking, "Could you make me a Frisco Melt just like thiers? You have all of the same ingredients."

Recipe for diasaster.

That box is close to, if not 20 years old. Craftsman still sold good solid made in the USA boxes then. $40 for a fully functional 40" box is a hell of a deal.
