Identify age of old snap on 5/8 socket

Hi, can someone help me identify an old 5/8 1/2" drive snap on socket? Model number is SW-200. Found it in gramps' shed.

1940's, and, based on the finish, which is either natural steel or worn and faded cadmium, likely WWII. Is there no other marking besides the branding, size, and the model number? They were usually date coded, but not always. Either a funny looking number or an "E", "G", or later perhaps.

Was it an orphan? Or is there a set or partial set?

There are no other markings. It's the only snap on I could find. Perhaps a replacement since there were SAE bahco MIS sockets but no 5/8?

I also asked a friend who says it's potentially from the 20s due to lack of markings and it seemingly matches the logo from 23-31 but there doesnt seem to be any SW-*** sockets in the 20s broschures so that theory doesnt seem to hold up..

It's definitely not from the 20's. The sockets were very different. Cold broached. Big band of knurling around the middle. The logo did not change (slanty, and true hyphen) on 1/2 dr stuff until 1948 or so, a little earlier on Ferret. I don't want to come off condescending, but I am not guessing in the dark here. I have 20s, 30s, and 40s Snap-on sets, and lots of wartime. That is a 40s socket, and likely wartime. Others will confirm when they wake up and log in.

During the wartime years, the date codes were stamped pretty casually. It’s possible that you have no date code because the stamping attempt occurred over the detent hole. Lugz is unquestionably correct in his dating. I have seen dozens and dozens of wartime Snap-on sockets.

Bobert, please make a picture of the code. It might be E (1944), G (1945), etc.
This is a almost complete set I picked up in 2020 (mostly 1944 with few 1945)

One reason that your 5/8” socket is easy to ID as wartime is the non chrome finish. 1940, 1941 1942 and postwar 1945 sockets are generally chrome plated. The sockets in the picture below are two from 1940, a postwar plated ‘45 and a 1” 1941 socket.


This is a 1/2” drive set all marked 1941.
This 1-1/8” socket has a 1942 date code.
