I'm thinking that vise design is a copy of a good English vise, but for the most parts almost every one you see is chicom. I'm pretty sure I have seen a vise that style that was a good vise from England. I have seen that vise with many made up tool company names from china.

He intimates that it's 40 + years old, I don't think the Chinese were building stuff like that for export then, were they?

Call the seller and see if there's a country or brand stamped on it anywhere?

Seems to be an English style, but with that logo and the handle ends nearly disappearing, I wonder if it's Turkish or Indian.

This maker has those: http://kanca.com.tr/Default.asp?Sec...=2&CategoryID=6&GroupID=14&CatName=Fortissimo

For English, click on British flag in upper right corner.

I have an old cheap Jap 4 inch "Western Auto" vise somewhat similar but clearly a different maker. So it could be Japanese by a better maker.

The unusally big mounting tabs, the generous fore-and-aft shelves for the slide, and the matching numbers on the static and dynamic jaws do not bespeak cheap manufacture.

Only questionable thing I've noticed is the shelves for the jaw faces appear small.

Wish I could go look at it.

It looks exactly like a chinese made Allied, so it is not probably 40 years old. Does not looks like a Turkish vise at all, not even close.

Almost certainly Asian built however one thing that bothers me is it's weight. that's almost a real vise based on 83#...

I'd go see it and see if that slight red showing through is bondo or primer over a clean casting, and VERIFY the weight claim... Also see if those swivel anchors and main screw parts are (badly) chrome plated. (Another dead giveaway)

I think the $$ has to be negotiable if the main screw is not pulling the dynamic jaw out when opening. as I suspect...

If you want to spend $150 on a vise in phoenix, there's a much nicer columbian on CL. One that looks really familiar to one I've seen on here, somewhere. I doubt the vise in question is 83 lbs or 40 years old, or worth more than 1/10 of $150.

Edit: well, I went looking for the columbian to link to it, and it seems its gone now.

The vise I presented ( 8 in jaws) seems to have the handle ends welded, maybe they are original to the vise or maybe they were added later. Anyway, it could have been a production change made at some point in time. I believe that the same chinese manufacturer, whichever it was, made both vises but with different names for different distributors and maybe with different handle ends. Also shown is another Allied but smaller, this one was presented by some other GJ member in the Show your vises thread. Allied probably does not build its own vises, so the design can change if they change the chinese manufacturer. Also shown is the vise in the ad (6 in jaws).

lol. I had fun restoring that Columbian and all the others that that fella got from me. As he's buying he says "now you won't be mad if these pop up on craigslist will ya?" I said nope, once the cash is in my hand they are yours and yours alone.

Just asking about this one because i hadn't seen that exact style before. And like Outlaw said, the weight makes ya wonder. If it worked good and really weighed 83 pounds i would give maybe $60 or $75 for it, assuming it is indeed imported (and NOT from England:)). Use it for a beater
