** identify this tool?? **

This mystery tool/metal object was found in a garage, trying to identify what is might be used for and what application it was intended. It appears to be a socket of some sort where and object is inserted and the two prongs can be adjusted/tightened on inserted object. The base is cone shaped on the inside with two screws that can be adjusted to provide support in the socket. The metal ring can slide up and down the prongs to lock/suppressed the prongs or slide back down to release the locking pressure. The other side has a rod with no threading present on the rod or outside of the socket which leads me to believe that it may be related to an electrically socket of some sort. Hope someone out there can identify and tell me what this tool/metal object is and what it was intended to be used on. Any more questions or photos please let me know! Thanks!

It looks like some sort of light duty puller to me. Maybe a seal puller? Possibly to be used with a slide hammer.

I've seen that but can't place it.

The end seems like it would go in a hand drill. Looks perfect for twisting off an extra tight pop bottle cap.

It reminds me of the light bulb grabbers you can put on the end of a pole.

I thought it was part of an antenna rotor until I saw the penny! the shaft must not turn since it's toothed into the housing, seems heavy for a lightbulb puller (break the bulb probably with those clamps).

I'm stumped...

Is that for holding a paint brush so it can be spun by a drill to aid in drying?

think you're on to something. the whole thing spins in a drill. now what fits inside? paint roller?

maybe a power pickle jar lid remover?

This is for drying rollers, see the claws, they look much like the example.

Drill-powered paint brush spinner sounds about right.

Put gadget into drill chuck, insert paint brush (house paint brush, not piddly artist paint brush! ) into jaws and slide the grabber-ring down until brush handle is held firmly, activate drill and spin excess paint off of brush (do this inside a 5 gallon bucket or large garbage can, the paint will go flying off the brush), dip brush into solvent of choice and repeat the spin-cycle, repeat until brush is clean or you run out of solvent or patience.

nother thought, maybe part of a power tennoner. kinda like the style for making log furniture, but maybe it's missing a part...

Why limit it's use to cleaning the brush, I bet it would make quick work of painting a room.
I'm gonna call if a paint sprayer, probably RONCO (as seen on TV). Probably get a cheaper version at HF.
