Identify this Vise?

I have a chance to pick this vise up for around $20.00. The owner is a friend and claims it is a Wilton Vise, 748a. However, I have not seen it in person and am not sure. It was damaged and they replaced it where he works, so it was being thrown away. He hauls scrap off and said he'd take scrap price. The box i'm assuming is from the replacement vise.

The damage is supposedly just the chip on the jaw, above the threaded hole. The guys he works with could break an anvil, so i'm sure it's had a somewhat rough life. Any clue what model it is? I didn't think it matched any current vises offered by Wilton.. but I don't know much about them, or if this is fixable. My neighbor owns a machine shop... so i'm sure he could do some machining on it if needed. Sorry I don't have any additional pictures.

Thanks again!

Nick

Low end vise missing a jaw insert, and jaw is broken where insert screw goes. How hard are vises to come by where you are? Lots of better vises out there.

Do you know the brand? This came from an oil rig (large company). I have only seen him bring high quality stuff home. I know he has a pair of titan chain tongs and a reed pipe vise that are almost new they threw out. I have a nice collection of pipe wrenches because they toss them when they break vs sending them in under warranty.

According to this site, a Wilton 748a weighs 91 lb. Might be worth picking up for lighter duty work.

$410 new at Home Depot.

I don't think it is a Wilton, the back of it looks longer. I don't know the age, but know the rig they are on is lead than 5 years old. I imagine most of the tools in the shop were new at that time.

That could be a wilton? the name plaque would go on the right hand side. They are like stickers, hence why its not there. But either way you have a trashed vice that was probably being junked from service. Look at all the handles bent, missing jaw, broken jaw attachments etc.And IN Any event that's not the kind of wilton that gets people excited when they hear the name...Wilton mystique is really only for bullet vices (machinist, C series and tradesman).

That's a Wilton....no doubt. Other than the 8" Jaw Width scrip, they only have the 8A marking on the left side.

After you pay him $20, buy a replacement jaw, buy new pipe jaws, try to get the screw hole fixed (not sure if a Helicoil could save that) and straighten the handle you would have enough in it you probably could have bought a vise without damage.

I may go ahead and pick it up. I know it is pretty ugly, but it looks like a good fit for the barn, or on the utility trailer. Oddly, i'm in SE Ohio, and I rarely see anything pop up for sale. I'd love a bullet to put in my shop one day.. and to be honest, i'd love to find some vintage tool boxes.. but again, nothing ever seems to pop up here. I fear most of the old stuff around here has already processed through the scrap yard, with every junkie trying to feed his addiction off scrap money. It's sad the stuff I have seen going trough there... and they can't sell any of it to you once they get it. Which makes it even more sad.

Thanks again!

I ended up snatching it for $10.00, plus i picked up a Reed pipe vise for $8.00. I may mount it on my utility trailer too. I think it would be a handy thing to have.

Nick,

Do you have any really good people that you know in outlying areas (where there are better and more frequent pickings ?) You can scour the CL ad vs for these things and have your friend pick it up, store it, and maybe ship it out or you could plan a trip around it.

Good luck, and keep looking. ....Shawn

I know what you mean about scrappers out there...I worked out of Pittsburgh and lived in steubenville...

I remember a counter guy at a johnstone supply always having to protect the dead motor they used to keep their door propped open, it seemed like every time I was there someone was attempting to take that door stop to a salvage yard.

I know what you mean. I'm just a few hours south of Steubenville on the Ohio River. I watch craigslist and fb for things in that area as well.

I have a few friends that live out of state, but none that would be interested in tool shopping for me :(
