I have a few unlabeled flat tip screwdrivers that I picked up over the years, and I was curious if anyone could tell me more about them, such as probable age or brand?

They are smaller than they look in photos, the shank is the same diameter as a regular screwdriver, but the handles are slim with ridged profile and are very comfortable to hold. To my untrained eye he handles are bakelite but just as easily could be some other resin or plastic. The amber-colored one is my fave :)

I suspect those are not Bakelite, but C.A.B. handles. I have no idea as to possible brand.

Not bakelite, bakelite is reinforced with various filler (saw dust, rock flour, asbestos, paper, etc) so its always opaque.

It's probably some kind of acetate or similar

OP your screwdrivers are not made out of bakelite.

Please for me could you get a strong magnifying glass and go over each handle and see if you can read any company name pressed into each handle. It might be hard as any color might have faded but you should be able to make out some letters possible a name, and report back your findings for me.

Thank you.

No, definitely not Bakelite.

Either Cellulose Acetate, or C.A.B (Cellulose Acetate Butyrate).

If they whiff a bit it’s probably the latter! Either way it’s a good practical material. Better than some of the soft finishes you find!

Don’t recognise the exact pattern, but I probably can’t count the number of firms who have made similar patterns over the years!

Thank you all for the wealth of responses!
Lots of useful pointers about Bakelite, I'll be sure to remember.

I checked the handles very carefully, but if they had any lettering it must have been painted on and has been completely obliterated. The material seems to have a faint smell to it, but nothing like the Xcelite handles so sounds like it would likely be Cellulose Acetate?
