It's easier... apparently locked threads can lead to banned people as well... deleting threads that break the rules here is less likely to leave posts around that are against the rules... trimming, banning etc... it's easier to just delete the thread.

The mods do a great job keeping this place cool... We like cool...

Sometimes it's just a judgement call, basically what Simon is saying. Some treads I leave and others I delete, generally depending on the information involved.

I'll refer to the HOA thread that just got deleted a few minutes earlier.

I reported it today

However when I saw it yesterday there was an earlier post that really bothered me...as I looked at this last night, I was thinking "reply"? "report"? "what will go on with this"? I did nothing last night, but it was troubling me.

Why was it troubling?

Becuase the contents of that post was a 'slight' against the 'other tribe'. Not overly political, but touching on the social/tribal aspects that float just under the surface here....

And here is where it gets dicey, and I really want this to be constructive...

We know that politics AND social interactions are highly charged these days: law and order; Second Amendment; blue vs white collar; red state/blue state; Libs; american flags; NFL kneeling.

One of the things I liked (past tense) about GJ was that it was a place for all of us to gather and talk about 'stuff'- irrespective of the size of the garage, your toys, your net worth. You know, that old "pull up a chair and get to know each other" thread...

For a time it felt like GJ was insulated.

But it really isnt. The management and the moderation clearly has a bend in what is acceptable, and which 'tribe' they tend towards. Cracks about libs, LBGT, gay ACLU lawyers get a yuck. Comments about 'flag threads not being a great idea as they tend to highlight the tribal conflict in our society' are ignored. (not even the courtesy of a reply)

Maybe it is my misperception, but folks can come out WAY over the line on one side, and when folks push back just a bit, mods tend towards a certain decision.

I do trust that these comments in this post are NOT viewed as a disrespectful attack on moderation. (yes, it is a commentary and gripe on it, but seeking a better community.) This stuff is hard: mods dont grow on trees; Mods come with their own view; there is no central decider nor central control... I just bring this up so we can discuss, and perhaps realize that when you 'side' with one tribe it is, tacitly, an affront to the other tribe.

And finally, instead of deleting the thread and not leaving any guidance, it would be better to say "this is unacceptabe- leave yor politics and social commentary at the door" Someone tests you, ban them for a week AND make it clear they are in time our.

But by leaving up the content it establishes a signpost for all to see what is acceptable behaviour.

IME moderating that sets a tone and example so all can see is much more effective than delete/ban/secret.

My 2 cents. Delete at will. But no ban please...

;)

I'll just add some thing many may not think about. I am a member of this forum because I enjoy what it is all about and to me my topic Sheddwellers is all about my building and what I do both in it and away from it. I am a Super Moderator second and part of that is to stop any drama and keep the forum with some decorum. If a topic goes off topic then some times it is easier simply to remove it. If it is closed then sadly it does not promote what we all enjoy as the issues are still seen.

I would believe Admin and the other Mods would agree we try to keep a topic open and decent as long as possible but then some times that is not easy so removing it is the better option for the forum. So as I posted earlier if the topic has gone you can only work out from that why it has gone as we as Mods just what to keep the forum decent.

At the end of the day if you and another poster agree to disagree about some thing leave it at that and move on. When we post about location you also have to remember the GJ is a very global forum and what may be a rule in one place may not be in another.

Doesnt have to lock. Can mature folks not have a reasoned conversation - especially in this subforum?

Sorry for being short with my comment. Let me just say... I was equally offended by you calling out those that broke the rules of this forum and had a thread rightfully deleted. What they said or meant subtle or not does not need to be hashed out by individuals who put themselves above others.

My maturity is not in question, never was and never will. I am also offended by you singling out my comment as being immature.

The world does not orbit around individuals here... even if they think it does.
