Many, many, MANY years ago I got a short, hands on training class on a Sun ignition scope. Those are those big machines you see with a CRT built into the upper part. While I had only a few hours of playing with it, I realized then that an experienced, well trained technician could use this to diagnose many conditions.

Is there some modern version of this tool that can be used in a similar fashion ? Specifically a diagnostic tool that can be used on 2 - 6 cylinder older, possibly magneto, ignition system as well as CDI systems, such as outboards ?

Or a tool that can quantitatively measure the high voltage so you can say more than "it has a fat blue spark" ? A built in "cylinder drop" would be helpful also.

Your best bet is either the pc route, or, you can look for a local sale on a Snap-On MT-1665 scope.

The MT-1665 has a lot of neat functions on it.

Will Post screen shots of the one that I have in a while.

Yep most automotive digital storage oscilloscopes are equipped to deal with ignition systems
The added advantage over the old "CRT" scopes is that they are portable/handheld and will record signals for analysis or future reference.

Take a look at Pico (PC based)/Snap On Vantage pro (handheld)
