Any wrench smaller than 7/16 I call an ignition and mine have been growing in numbers for a few years, storage has always been a problem. I aquired a three draw craftsman tool cabinet and started putting in any thing small wrenches, pliers screwdrivers ,nail sets, small files, small punches and small anything. I now have to much stuff for the cabinet. Another good idea gone to pot. what do you guys do with your small stuff? It seems if you put it in with the like item it gets lost in the crowd bob w,:dunno:

My ignition wrenches are in a small plastic tub that sits in one corner of my SAE wrenches drawer. I can pick up the tub and rummage in it for a particular wrench, or carry it to the work to find the right wrench by fit.

Excuse my ignorance, but what are they used for? I've never used ignition wrenches, nor do i know anyone who owns them. But i don't work on much that doesn't use electronic ignition. :)

Ignition points generally have small hex nuts on them to attach the wire from the condenser and the primary lead to the coil, hence the term "ignition wrench", however, as they are much shorter and thinner than comparable wrenches they have many uses on small things which have hex nuts, hex headed screws, etc.

bob ny,

Regarding storage of small tools...

I have a small machinest chest on my work bench that has lots of narrow shallow drawers (about 9" wide x 7-1/2" deep. I keep SAE ignition wrenches in one, Metric ignition wrenches in another, feeler guages/plug guages/point files and plug gappers in another, SAE allen wrenches in another, Metric allen wrenches in another, mini pick & hook set in another, and jewelers files in yet another drawer.

These smaller machinest chests, with their narrow drawers, are ideal for small tools of all kinds. And the chest itself does not take up much real estate on a work bench. You might want to explore this type of storage for smaller tools.

And recently, I bought an old Crafty tool chest (26" x 12") that I'm restoring to store other small tools. This chest has 12 drawers total, but only 3 drawers are full width. The remaining 9 drawers are narrow making them ideal for small tools. This chest is eventually going to store drill bits of all kinds, burs, reamers, punches, drifts, chisels, taps & dies, small to medium files, and precision measuring tools. This tool chest is going under another work bench where my drill press, arbor press and grinders are mounted.

The trend here on the GJ is towards large storage cabinets and chests that hold massive amounts of larger tools. But there are still many applications for smaller storage chests with smaller drawers in the home garage/shop. Think small overall footprint with lots of small drawers.

Hope this helps with your storage dilema.

Mine get used to tighten the nuts on the back of after-market gauges. They are about the only thing that fits and you can reach up behind the dash with them if needed.

I keep my ignition wrenches on an air hose clip and throw them in the drawer with my normal size wrenches.

I used them once to tighten the antenna on my truck (perfect size), and they come in handy for electrical/electronics stuff.

I have a Sort-a-tool wrench holder that they just went into a little bin section of, as I'm trying to free up space in the wrench drawer. They were previously just in their pouch. I like the soap box idea, though.

I also like the soap box idea! I onyl ahve 5 or 6 S-K ignition wrenches, and they sit in the top of my Craftsman "at home carry around box".

Edit: I use the big clip as mentioned before for the combination style wrenches, and the double open end wrenches are rowed up on a couple of magnets, (The same type magnets I use for sockets)

The name "ignition wrench" is long past any meaningful significance, but not only the ignition components of cars used them back in the day, but the old generator and early alternator regulators also used them as well as the control wiring for the starter solenoids. These days, with the exception of starter solenoids, (at least some of them...) you are more likely to see them used in the various electronics control boxes, if there.

Currently Used for: If you work with numbered machine screws a lot like I do, you use these and "spin tights" AKA Nut drivers. and/or the many odd sizes of 1/4 drive sockets.

My Ignition wrenches stored:
