'Ignore Member' List

For the first time ever, I have utilized the ignore list on a discussion forum.

As has been mentioned by others, the ability to write a sensible posting greatly enhances the ability of forum members to read, understand and respond to your thread posting.

The vast majority of forum members make an attempt at readable postings. I know I've made my share of typos, mis-spelled words, etc. I usually catch them and edit my postings to correct.

If your postings are an endless stream of horrendous spelling, bad grammar, no punctuation, and incoherent ramblings, then few of your fellow GJ members are going to take any interest in your postings.

One member falls into this category for me. Three days on my ignore list now.

No more 'what the hell is he trying to say' moments !

This seems like something you could just do privately.

As for the specific criticism you have, it is ironic that I as a teacher with ten years of experience find it less troublesome that some stranger on the internet does not write to my liking than some of you other chaps do.

Anyway, he's on your ignore list, problem solved, no need to talk more about it, right?

I have to agree with the op on this one. It's very frustrating when you have to reread a post several times to figure out what it means. I do feel that a couple of these posters are doing this intentionally. If they aren't, our educational system is going down hill faster than I thought.

I have 3 or 4 people on ignore for that reason. Got tired of reading stuff in third person or stuff that was written by someone with 3rd grade English skills.

One member comes to mind when it comes to grammar and spelling, but to me is no reason to ignore or criticize. Some people are just flat out not very good at spelling, but have other attributes to make up for it. If it is the member that I am thinking of, quite a few were pretty harsh on him. I also remember quite a few were harsh on Deafautotech for a while until they were put in their place. I try to look at where people come from and their background before criticizing.

I have a feeling I fall into this category, usually it's because I am typing too fast for my fingers to correspond to the right buttons on the keyboard and I seldom re-read my postings for typos. I wasn't aware that it was taken so offensively lol I will try to take a few more seconds on my typing so I don't get put on the ignore list

I do however know of one person who I believe everyone has reached a consensus on prior to me posting whose spelling and grammar are nonexistent. I wouldn't pick on him he may be trying his best, but some people it is just their pet peeve so they can't ignore it. It is the internet though and the internet messages have been founded on abbreviations and slang so I think many people don't hesitate to ignore their mistakes.

just my $.02 but it is hard to understand people after a certain extent and I see what you are saying.

In a world of rampant crime, financial peril, and a general state of ********** among men, who gives a frig about spelling on an internet forum? If the person in question is civil and sincere, that's just a smidge more important, dontcha think?

But if not then hey, setup the ignore feature and move on.

I Moderate a Car forum with 90,000 members. The "Ignore Member" is a nice feature to have. The way we run the Forum is if you are posting within a Technical Thread then please use proper spelling/grammar/punctuation. In the Off-Topic or Not Related Sections then I don't really care. It hurts my head to try and make sense of gibberish so I skip over those posts and move on. Most people come to the Site for help so it is within their best interest to comply with the Grammar Nazi's. =)

Actually this is one of my quotes that is in my signature on the Car Forum for people starting New Threads...

A little overboard but with more and more kids these days typing in Text Talk it helps to get my point across.

I completely agree with the OP. One particular post comes to mind. During one thread in which this individual posted, some conversation ensued and it was revealed that he was rather young and simply didn't put much emphasis on grammar and spelling. According to him, neither do his peers, as is obvious from today's "text language" culture. Even though this is merely an internet chat blog where most people are strangers, if an individual does not care enough to come across as articulate, why should they expect a complete stranger to put any stock in what they have to say?

I find it curious that people choose a recreational activity - participating on an internet forum - that requires communicating with other people via the written word, when they are completely unable to do so. It's not just on this forum, but on several that I frequent.

Even stranger, when the membership inevitably says "you're typing gibberish, no one can understand you," the response is just as inevitably "who cares u no wut i ment its the internet get over urself."

So yeah, sometimes the ignore feature is nice.
