Just wanted to show the short project I finished today. Found this Illinois Iron & Bolt Company Screw Jack (sometimes called a host of other names) at an estate sale this weekend. I gave it a vinegar bath and then finished it off with Rust Oleum Rust Reformer and a little accent paint.

I just used Rust Oleum Rust Reformer, which technically is a primer, so I may shoot it with a clear coat after it cures.

This is the only one I have of its kind.

I forgot to mention there is a "71" cast on the inside of the bell. I'm theorizing it is a date--1871. II&B was established in the mid 1860s and they eventually used an arm & hammer insignia with the name Vulcan. I haven't found when this occurred but this jack seems to pre-date that event.

That's really nice, great job. There was one listed here on c-list recently but the guy was asking like $150 for it.

I have a rare II&B vise that a cherish. It's a 4.5" jaw with an exceptionally long dynamic jaw length at about 18". Clearly meant for a farm mechanic, kind of a do-all vise. Love it. Still need to do a resto - I had a main nut made for it a couple of years ago as the original was cracked and unusable.

Thanks!

That's a monster. I never heard of II&B until this weekend now I'm sure they will be popping up left and right!

I checked CL and eBay and there are lots of screw jacks out there with amazing asking prices. I paid $5 for mine.
