I wonder if anyone knows the rebuild kit number for the 42973 ratchet? We have one that a customer brought in for exchange, and when I opened it, I discovered that the customer had lubricated it with motorcycle chain lubricant! I might be able to get it to work with just a little bit of cleaning and relubing, but if I could get the kit, that would be super. By the way, motorcycle chain lubricant is NOT good for ratchets. It has volatile compounds that evaporate, leaving a waxy goo that will not fly off a motorcycle chain running at high speeds, but it will damned sure make the ball and spring stick down in the hole and keep a ratchet from working properly!
I'm an old motorsports journalist (Eastern US Contributing Editor of Cycle World Magazine 1974 - 1978, Member of the American Racing Press Association for a couple of years as well) and general English/Italian sports car and motorcycle freak. I was the Activities Director and Newsletter Editor of the Sports Car Club of Western Mass, Inc, and years later was the Vice President and Newsletter Editor of Abate of Alachua County, FL. I still own a 1974 Ducati 750 Sport that I bought brand new, though I lost the rest of my car and bike collection during various incidents in 1981 and earlier. I drove an MGA Twin Cam roadster on the road for several years from 1964 to about 1967, had a 1962(?) MG Midget with the best running 948 engine I've ever seen, had a friend with an RHD Bugeye Sprite that I used to drive once in a while, and I navigated rallyes with him in his sister's Volvo P-1800.
I have everything Snap-On made in 1993-1994 in the way of Whitworth wrenches, after someone (I knew who, but couldn't prove it) stole all my earlier stuff. I would dearly like to find some more of the long-handled WOEX series wrenches (all they make now is the stubby stuff) like I used to have. Alas, unfortunately, I do not have any available funds, since I had to double my mortgage payment and apply for early retirement Social Security in order to make the payments. Another 18 of 'em and the house will be paid for, and I'll be a little more flush.... Then I'll have to find another BSA Gold Star and MGA Twin Cam to use my Whitworth wrenches on....
I also want to turn an old Honda CB350G frame I have into an electric motorcycle. Batteries will be the hard (and expensive) part. That would allow me to commute to work very cheaply. I also have a CB350F like the one I bought brand new from **** Bettencourt in 1973 (except the engine is seized), and I have a clapped out 1983 VT750C which is THE bike that made Harley cry "Uncle" that year! I rode it 3500 miles in ten days to my 40th class reunion at Mount Hermon School. When I moved last, I lost a Kawasaki A1 rotary valve 2 stroke and a gorgeous Yamaha RD 250B. I also still have a Honda CL-360 and an RD 350C that has been converted into a cafe racer with Factory (brand) megaphones and other goodies.... And I have a CB-77 Super Hawk in pieces as well.
I'm also a photographic nut--I used to crank out up to about 400 8 x 10 color prints a week in my own darkroom, and I still have all that gear, but not set up. Now I do digital, and can't afford a real digital SLR, but I have a Z712 Kodak and a compact Samsung PL210. I owned a computer store for several years in the late 90s, and I have a lot of 286-era stuff and some older Tandy models in that collection. I lost my whole camera collection to theft, have maybe half a dozen pieces left. My favorite daily user was a Kodak Retina iiiC (actually, I think it was a iiic which was slightly older) in like new condition, which was stolen when I stayed in a Stouffer's owned motel outside of Columbus Ohio in 1971, I'd love to find another one like that, and I'd also love to find a WWII-era Ducati camera. They had the world's smallest interchangeable lens full frame 35mm camera around 1940, and it would be a sweet piece to add to my collection, since I am a stone Ducati motorcycle freak. In addition to the 1974 750cc Sport, I had a 200cc Americano and a 250cc Diana Mk III, and I would love to find a 200cc Elite, the earliest (blue) Diana and a 350 Desmo to go along with my present collection....
Ah to sleep, perchance to dream.... And I tell a few jokes and sing a few songs, occasionally in French, at the Reverend Angel Dust's Tabernacle of Hedonism with your Host Tom Miller on Monday nights in a local bar, heh heh.... And I have a green thumb, inherited from my Uncle Gordon, who was President of the American Dahlia Society in 1940, just before I was born.... I have about 50 blueberry plants, and other goodies in my garden, so I try to eat well, and I expect to be around well past my hundredth birthday in thirty years or so.
