Sears has this SK flexhead, I think 1/4'', ratchet on there racks. Does Sears warranty this item? I've been eyeing this tool.

I don't think Sears would warranty it for life like a Craftsman tool. You might get like 90 days though.:headscrat

On a side note, all of you that said that you won't buy any SK tools will also contribute to the death of another American tool company. As for me, I don't really need any more tools but, I'll still pick SK when I can. I haven't had any real failures. I have more than a few elephant man tools where the shape and finish isn't perfert but, the tool works. I know SK has probably created some of their own problems by branching out into air tools that no one seems to buy, and other mismanagement but, I still hate to see the favorite tool company of my youth bite the dust.

SK has been squeezed by the unions for so long they are probably done for unless they move to another state and lose the union.

Detroit is done, stick a fork in it, the unions have destroyed the place, they would need to move to a place like Tennessee or another 'employment at will' state.

I also hope that they don't go out. My first wrench was an SK 9mm combo that I bought for the brake bleeder screw on my car. I have since lost it. It was so beautifully finished that it has left an indelible mark of quality in my brain. I like quality tools and use them as a hobbyist so I'm not too concerned about warranties although they are certainly nice to have. I'm still considering an SK ratchet to add to my collection.

I know SK has probably created some of their own problems by branching out into air tools that no one seems to buy, and other mismanagement but,

I bet that is the source of a lot of their problems. They really were a small player to begin with and they probably don't have the sales volume or distribution to move into a new business like air tools with much success. In addition, they probably borrowed a lot of money to develop those air tools. Then the economy tanked so now they are having problems paying the bills. My guess is that SK is doing everything they can to survive.

I wonder what I could buy the company for now? Hmmm, I always wanted a wrench factory. I could hire a few guys from this board to do QA.

What would you do if your employer cuts off health care without even telling you. That`s a bit unfair. As you can read here most employees make between $12 and $14. That`s not much.

tip of the iceberg:

"In addition to the cutoff of their health insurance, the workers are also facing demands for a temporary $4 per hour wage cut and a permanent 20 percent wage cut to get the company through the recession, workers on the picket line said. Management had earlier sought to reopen the contract to obtain a 50 percent wage cut, but workers refused.

"It seems like he [Claude Fuger] wants us to work for minimum wage with no benefits," Emilio Lunar said. But that's another battle: The current walkout is limited to an unfair labor practice--cancellation of health care."

So i don`t see blaming the unions for this. Without unions the employees still would be bondslaves of the employers without health care, unemployment insurance, holidays and 8 hrs. workday and would be working for $1 an hour like in china where you can get fired or even arrested by the police if you don`t want to do what the employer says or even attend a strike. The only ones always blame the unions are the employers......

Dont fall into the Trap Monte, 70% agree with you including me, 29% think the Unions are the root of all evil and then we have Mickey.... He spends his whole day googling "Gearwrench, Harbor Freight, China Tools and i guess now Unions" joining forums trying to impose his knowledge (LOL) and will onto people. I need to get ahold of Merk and figure out how this Ignore feature works.

Nope, They went on strike account Sk Unlawfully discontinued there health care without Notifying its employees and then wanted them to take a 35-40% Pay cut with a NO Benefits. The union workers was willing to take a pay cut to offset the Poor economy and sales.

Dont worry I have a feeling Sk will be moving there tool manufacturing abroad and there unwillingness to even negotiate is evidence they dont care about there employees and only about the Mighty Dollar. I have some old SK stuff but i would rather swing a HF ratchet before id buy anything new from those Jackass's.

Apparently they care about getting their line of credit unfrozen and being able to keep the company afloat.

Realistically though, 12 paid holidays? Last time I checked, if I don't show up to work I don't get paid for the time I am not there. Nobody is entitled to ANY paid holidays. Its a convenience and a luxury.

The pay cut is unfortunate, the lack of healthcare *****. It is obviously a tough situation but I would really like to see the full picture here. This strike has done detrimental damage to SK. If what the mobile dealer in the comments says about the intentional defects is true, these workers have also done detrimental damage to SK's reputation. If you are unhappy with your job, leave. Do not deface the reputation of your employer, as I am sure there are many many people who rely on the GOOD reputation of your employer for income.

Google "SK tools strike" and look at all the "fight back" type commentary that comes up. People seem to think that companies set out to intentionally screw their employees. What these people who were on strike will not acknowledge is the negative impact it has had on their relations with management. Im sure there were plenty of congratulatory cheers amongst themselves when SK gave in, but I would venture to guess that in the long run, they just lost.

I will support this strike if new tools from SK are being shipped in flawless condition. I will give it a few months and place an order DIRECTLY from SK, paying full price. Somehow, I doubt I will be happy with my purchase.

So your all american but against unions? I guess you don't realize what the union has done for american workers? I am a union member but not for everything the union does, such as keep some worthless people from getting fired. But really, what do you think everyone would be making $$$ wise if it wasn't for them?

there are people who wants to work, work hard, specially in the midwest. Willmington, OH, I've read and watched about the stories of that town.

let's face it, before the economy turns around, eventually it will, for a lot of people, work is better than unemployed, minimum wage is better than no income after EDD runs out. for many commercial building owners, I'd rather to rent out the warehouse for free so someone is paying for the maintenance and security, than let it sit empty and I have to pay for these costs out of pocket. there are local government rather you to hire local people and not paying taxes.

I'm not trying to bait a union argument, I didn't even know that was a matter of contention here, I was stating what I believe to be the way it is.

the plug has been pulled on several threads that became union argument's on the basis it's political.

I was stating what I believe to be the way it is.

then consider my question in post #59.........

All is not as it would seem in that article, without getting into all the union ****, those employees cost SK a lot more than $12 - $14 an hour. SK would like more than anything to pay their worker a good wage and to go on as a profitable tool company, any business would, it's their very purpose but there is a lot more involved.

I'll tell you a quick little story about unions, something that I know first hand. I'm not trying to tell people what to think about unions, my father was in a union for over 25 years, I was also in a union. I'm not pro or anti union, I think they have their place, some I like some I don't.

My girlfriends family owns a company that employs around 500 people here in Illinois and and nearby states, they are a non-union private company. They do not want a union in their company, they don't believe their company could be profitable if it was unionized, their competition are huge national companies. On top of that it's their private business, if someone wants to work at a union business they are free to leave and do so. Most of their employees are "lifers", some leave but most come back, new people were added as the company grew. For years now the union has been trying to get in, they park their big trucks with billboards out front, picket and try to coerce the employees to sign up. They have even placed plants (a person to get a job there and talk pro union and get a vote started) in the company to try and get the union in there, the union has failed so far. For years now the competition has wanted to buy them and close the place, they could take the large sum of money and retire but they haven't sold because they don't want to put 500 people out of work. What will happen if the union gets in, especially if the new laws that make it easier to unionize are passed? They will sell they business, 500 people will be out of work and on welfare. That's happening a lot around this country.

One last thing I've worked in several of the homes of 'union leaders' out here, the homes were in Elmwood Park and the fenced in section of Rosemont, the people from this area should know what that means.

I'll try to make this the last thing I say about unions and get back to China tool bashing.

Just because a state is an at will state for employment doesn't mean their aren't unions. There's even a food service union here. If you are in a union the employer can't just fire you because he thinks you look funny. On the other hand, you can get fired even if you are in a union. The employeer has to have a reason and go through the proper procedures. This seems to keep the lazy worthless people out of them for the most part.

I think there may have to be some turn over in upper level management for SK to pull out of its slump. I think it certainly could be done and hope it is. I've personally bought two ratchets in the past month from our SK dealer and I think I'm going to buy another couple next month.

of course your girlfriends family doesn't want a union. with 500 employee's just saving $1 per hour will put 1 million dollars a year in thier pockets, while the $1 an hour might be the difference between eating or buying a decent vehicle for the employee............

please one more thing.......answer my question. why is it that one company can be profitable with a union and others can't?

Not at all, the business runs on ultra thin margins, the $1 an hour is the difference between a job or no job, it doesn't put a million dollar extra in their pockets. But even if it did, it's their company and they provide lots of good jobs, health insurance, a service and pay lots of taxes, they are in business to make a profit.

Her folks live in a modest home and drive modest vehicles, they aren't living large on the backs of slave labor.

Don't know, it may be a Chicago thing, everything is so corrupt out this way especially the unions and since so much is unionized out here it's hard to know otherwise.

The unions I like are the ones like the IBEW, Carpenters union, etc., where there seems to be a purpose to them other than collecting dues, they train the people and have an apprenticeship. Other unions seem to be there just for the sake of being there, they don't train people, they don't assure top quality workers and they make difficult to fire incompetent people, those I don't like. Plus out here some of the unions are in bed with the companies and that's no good for anyone but the unions and the companies.

Now that's it for unions for me, don't tempt me.

Pretyy clear you don't run a biz. If there is siply not money then that is just the way ot is. The workers may diserve 3x that much but if all you can pay them is $8hr than that is all you can do. My guess is that all all SK can afford to pay or go out of existance. ***** for everyone but that may be the simple reality.

of course they deserve a profit. i don't think either of us has looked at thier ledger sheet but do the math. 500 employees x 2000 hrs per year x $1 per hour = $1,000,000. not saying they don't deserve that kind of money, just showing how it add's up:bounce:

how come one company can be profitable with a union and another not?

the only thing is management. for the ones who aren't profitable organized labor is a scapegoat. it's thier poor decisions that are to blame. thats what we have with SK, they have a long history of poor warranty and screwing thier vendors along with recent quality control problems. even with slave labor they would have a hard time surviving. they also have marketing problem's. you could sell dog **** if it's marketed properly and even the best product will not sell if it isn't marketed properly. i also believe that they have lost two important private labeling contract's, sears and snap on (yes i believe they were the vendor for snap on's swivel impacts, which are being phased out and replaced by another vendor) probably due to warranty claims not being reimbursed. those are due to short sighted managment.

you'll not get any argument from me........

the shame of it all is some are blaming employees, who have not been the ones making the poor decisions that will be thier demise. maybe the ceo should have been studying the histories of duro, bonney, etc. instead of trying to make thier year end bonuses.

we have heard a lot about how the employee's deserve to be unemployed for wanting what they have written in thier contacts, but doesn't the ceo deserve to be on the bread lines for ****** thier companies?

If the dollar was there to begin with, it isn't, when I say thin profit margins I mean thin, real thin, there's not a lot of extra money to be tossed around, they give out raises base on performace of the employee and of the company, if the company doesn't make more money they can't give out raises.

not tempting you but.........you still haven't answered my question.

how come one company can be profitable with a union and another not?

I don't know, one company may have a better contract or be in bed with the union. It might be the that the profitable company is with a better union that provides better trained and overall better employees, who knows, without knowing all the details it's anybodies guess.

Here's what I can tell you, there have been several unionized companies here in Illinois that were having difficulties closed down and reappeared in other states with a new name and are doing quite well. Maybe it's the quality of the workforce in Illinois, maybe it's the corruption here, maybe they had bad contracts. Unions are great at negotiating themselves all types of benefits when things are good, getting paid while not working, etc., but they're not so good at giving concessions when times are rough, they'd rather bankrupt the company it seems.

My biggest problem with unions is with them trying to muscle themselves into privately owned businesses. It would be like if you had three kids at home and they could overrule you on anything they wanted to. Obama signed it into law, a majority can decide what happens in your house, you'd be watching a lot of cartoons and eating a lot of McDonalds. But that doesn't happen because it's your house, you're the boss and you certainly wouldn't want anyone telling you what you can and can't do in the place you bought or built with your sweat and your money, would you?

My guess is that all all SK can afford to pay or go out of existance. ***** for everyone but that may be the simple reality.

Yeah I feel for these companies who misrepresent there financial sitsuation to the public. Poor.. AIG, Banks, GM, Ford, Chrysler. It always boils down to the employees fault regardless of if there union or not. Why do none of these companies want to look at the CEO bonuses, Perks etc. Is everyone blind in this world? Why is a bonus and off the chart salary warranted when the company is in the gutter? If Sk was in such bad shape they should have cut back production till the economy rebounded for there products. Again... I repeat the employees offered to take a Pay cut to help during the trying times. Instead it took Labor Relations filing a "Unfair Labor Practice complaint" against them to get them to talk. BIG PICTURE FELLAS, Check it out...

i think you'll find he does...........do you?

if a company has to cut it's employees wages then the problem is somewhere else ( please see my previous post).

In fact I do. I underpay my small staff. They are worth more, or at least I think they are, but there is simply not enough money in the account to afford any more and still operate. Many months they make more than I do. Justa reality sometimes.

the company my wife works at didn't laid off 1 person during the great depression. now it's laying off 5500. 5 years ago it was the top 10 best companies to work for in America, now the water fountains in the hallway have been removed to save money. needless to say I've been seeing my dentist recently because starting Jan 1st, the new benefit package is a piece of ****.

but I don't feel bad, little benefit is hell a lot more than no benefit at all.

I'm a retired telephone man(worked 69-2000) this week I sent my first check to AT&T to help with the cost of medical insurance. It is a sign of the times. I bought most of my hand tools in early 60's and 70's. In the 80's and 90's I bought mostly Mac metric stuff. S-K is the tools of my choice and second is Proto/Plomb. I mostly hobby-garage and hot rod but most of my ratchets are S-K 1/4 --3/4" and I NEVER had any tool failure; did crack a few CM sockets. I worked 10 years as a mechanic on phone trucks and company supplied Snap-on tools for the company garage. When I changed to phoneman I was required to use only company owned or supplied tools on the job. I am proud of my old S-K collection and still enjoy fixing things.
My wife enjoys her gold and diamonds while my Snap-on boxes hold my treasures, enough said.......
