Here's a little glimpse inside my 20' x 28' deep shared garage with my WIFE :willy_nil We're running out of room and looking for storage ideas. Obliviously I could take everything out, drywall, put in cabinets, and that whole bidness, but not in budget! Ideas???

First I would suggest that you sit with the wife and prioritize what the garage is being used for. Then list what you want to use it for, but can't. When you have the list take one or two of the bottom priorities and remove anything that they encompass. I see crutches there, let the good will store them for you. Antlers, take a picture of them and store that, let the antlers go. Ya got some antique tools displayed, is that best use of that space?

To me it looks like a pottery shed. Make the pottery manufacturing as efficient as you can. I would get some 1x6 and turn some stud bays into shelves. There is a thread on here , show us your storage. Go through that and glean ideas. Storage thread

I like the idea of more stud bays into some recessed shelving. I have some similar shelving over the work bench in the back and on the other side of the garage. I've even built rafter supports and put 4'x8' sheets of plywood in the rafters for storage for much more of my antique tools and lawn and garden equipment.

You've mistakenly put up pictures of your wife's storage room, where's the pictures of the garage? You know, the place full of car stuff, and ONLY car stuff!

Do you have a dining room in the house? Wtf is the table doing in there, that takes up valuable space. Can you put a shed or lean-to outside for the bike and other things that don't belong in a working shop? I see it looks like she does pottery or something, you have tools etc, I would take the advice in the second post.

I've studied the photos and what I would do is... 1) Have a seat in the chair facing the dining table. 2) Place each arm firmly beside my body. 3) Slam head into table top as hard as possible. 4) Repeat. :D

Just kidding, man. (Sort of! :D)

All garages are different. It seems like that space is heavily tipped toward your wife's stuff. Maybe you need a shed to move your stuff into? I don't know what type of projects you're into but it certainly appears you're not going to get much work done in there.

  1. Garage Sale
  2. Bakery type rack for the in progress pottery
  3. Did I mention 'garage sale' ?

A bakery rack(s), with easily adjustable shelves (which look remarkably like baking sheets, because that's what they are) will allow you to be much more efficient on space with the pottery. The racks are also generally wheeled, so you can jam multiples together, rolling them around as needed.

Ow you're getting some heat lol.
What stuff do you 2 feel, shouldn't be there? Move on from there. Clear space. Build upper level storage, and keep working on it.

The first thing I saw in your pictures was the DRILL PRESS. WOW, I would love to have one like that. No need to take heat for anything. You have a multi-use garage, and your needing to expand. Aren't we all in that situation? Most of us buy sheds and put the uncompleted projects and supplies in them. I just cleaned out my shed and found I was storing things that floated over on Noah's Ark. I now have more shop space in the shed.
Some places can't have sheds. In those cases stuff gotta go. Hard to pick what, but it's gotta go before it chokes the life out of you. For most of us "Furniture--house style" is not in our garages. It does not look good and it does not fit well. So I would start there, moving it out, selling, giving away. That dining table is costing you real estate big time.
No heat--we all face the same thing. What we do thank you for is making a thread and posting your garage and welcome aboard!!!

Best Regards
Herb Spencer

I suspect that over time,

... those pigs will start breeding ... You need to plan on more shelving ..

Is the pottery a hobby, home business ... or just a temporary fad,
... as that will dictate how work space should be given over to it .. ;);)

Start collecting materials for shelving/storage.

Her stuff on one wall,
Yours on the opposite,
Common use stuff on the end wall,

Cleanups after use of area.

... big red line down the centre of the floor .. ;);) ..

Better be delicate or this could go very badly. Looks like she needs her own pottery barn, can you build a simple 12x12 workspace for her? The key here is to have it attached with a doorway so it's not like you are trying to get away from her. Tell her that this will also help protect her work from damage / paint over spray / noise / sparks / etc. from your projects, Put heat and A/C in there if needed so she work in comfort also - that will go far.

I count about eight pieces of furniture in there. I think everyone is missing the boat here. Let the wife have the garage and move your shop into the living room. It's probably more convenient for tv and fridge access anyway.

The pottery stuff is turning into a bidness! We have some items in consignment shops... don't think all those pots are hers, I have a few in there!

When my wife try's to bring her stuff (garden, craft, collectibles) into MY garage I tell her if that stays in here more than a day I'm storeing my snowmobile engine on the kitchen table!

She replys to that with it doesn't belong there, I politely look at her stuff and say think about what you just said!

My wife would never put anything in my 50x40 hangar because I would immediatly throw it away.I built her a sewing room and she has most of the house.

All teasing aside, it is AWESOME if you and your wife can enjoy the space together... My wife loves to spend time with me in the garage passing wrenches.

Built my first chopper in the dining room on the dining room table,ac in the house was better than hell in the garage,if house is big enuff, store urs ours and mines stuff in one of the bedrooms, its a mental challenge but it can and has been done, free up space in the shop, you will tend to ignore the **** in the bedroom.

Spare bedrooms are overrated, and under utilized.Unless you have a maid.
