So here it is, the box Ive wanted for so long, not 30 miles from where I sit... of course it looks like hell. It looks like itd be a project box, but Ive always loved this model.

The seller said nothing more than some of the drawer slides have been replaced. Hes asking 1500... which seems too high since it looks like it needs paint. What say ye knowledgeable brethren of GJ?

1500 is really high for a KR100 in that condition. They pop up for less than 1k fairly often. For 1500 it better be mint.

seems a little high, the most i'd pay in that condition is 600. That bottom drawer looks bent, and theres a dent in the left side trim. Theres a mint one in my area for 1000 obo so this one seems way over priced.

Looks like it has been used in a diesel or other nasty heavy equipment shop. Besides being very dirty, it does look to have a few bruises from hits. From what I have seen I think $1500 is ~2x what that one is worth. Unless lots of the slides have been replaced recently.

Keep one thing in mind. If you have to replace slides out of your own pocket. They are ~$100 per drawer from SO, so it will add up real quick.

I thought as much but didnt want to low ball the guy too much. Thanks yall.

So, would it be worth grabbing at any price even though it does need the work?

The box Im working with now is one of the old snap on aviators, with the friction sliders. I just got a job and am going to need a more user friendly box and Im really not a fan of the modern quality.

Offering him a reasonable price isn't lowballing. Lowballing is offering $100 for something that a reasonable person would know is worth $500 for example.

He's full of sh/t if he thinks that box is worth anything close to $1500.

:shocking: Score one for friction slides. :rocker: Not much a arbor press some blocks of wood and possibly a welder can't fix. :lol_hitti

I think that would clean up alright. Open and close all the drawers and check them over for cracks or if they are twisted out of shape. The bottom drawer is out of whack but might just need slides. I think 700-750 would be a good starting point

You just need to see it in person. Dirty SO red boxes can clean up much better then expected. However I wouldn't touch a box that needs total repainting or major repairs.

Thankyou sir! That puts an image with a number for me.

By the way Kblazer, that screen name seems familiar. Are you on bimmerforums by chance or do I just recognize it from here?

This one just sold near me for less than $1,000. The one you are looking at I wouldn't offer more than 400.00 for, due to the work it looks like it needs..

How much did it sell for? I'm pretty sure I know which member it belonged to.

Maybe there are KR1000 variations but mine and others I've seen have 2 locks and the logo on the right side...

89' and up just had one lock I believe.

I think you have that flipped. I think roughly in 89' ish they changed from a single lock to double locks. The earlier boxes are the ones that have just one lock and the badge on the left.

I got an 88 that has double locks. They only made them from 87-92? I believe.

Any shop I've been around these things are kept in mint condition. When you drop a month's paycheck or better on a toolbox it warrants some extra care, which this seems to not have..

The box would be a pre '89, One of the guys at work has one like that with the single lock. Mine's an '89 w/ two locks (KR-1000B variant)

Looks like the box could use some pressure washing, I'd say depending on condition in person, 800-1000$.

I have a 91' catalog that shows double locks. :dunno: Maybe they selected boxes at random just to screw with us down the road. I will say though it seems the double lock boxes are much more prevalent than the single lock boxes. Maybe yours was towards the end of 88 and one of the first to get the double locks.

You need to get out more amigo, specifically to nasty shops. I completely understand your argument, but, and thankfully for me, not many folks actually follow through with that notion.

I'm sure there's exceptions, but most I know treat their tools and boxes as well as or better than family. But you're right I've probably not been in a nasty shop, mostly dealership and test centers. Where I am now the guys in the shop always keep their boxes locked and covered when not there, and they're all clean as a whistle. Many have the custom graphics etc.

Mine also has the two locks & logo on the right. It does not have the single extra-wide top drawer like the later models have. It does have the long compartment on top (which can't be locked), under the mat. I keep my 3/4" drive handle, ratchet head etc. in there. I bought my KR-1000 new in 1987 for around $3K with a SO "Roll-A-Bench" (the one with the shiny roll-down door that enclosed the drawers) as a trade-in. It has been in my home garage since I retired from being a mechanic in 2000. And it is stuffed with Snap-On tools :D

I was thinking of lowballing him no matter what and hopefully ending around your mark. These pop up all the time but never anywhere near me. As long as it doesnt NEED a full paint job and the drawers arent super tweaked or coming apart Imma want it bad.

And to comment on the condition, Alot of guys who are employed mechanics Ive met keep a super clean box. The guys who own the shop they work in or the ones who are doing big work such as diesel and semi/tractor stuff seem to be a bit dirtier. Not sure why this is, but like it was said earlier, in this stage in my life I can afford to grab some slides/ mend drawers/ paint entire boxes. I cant really slash dont want to afford a new box at 5-7 k like the modern equivalent would be.

That bottom left drawer is pushed in too far and that bottom right drawer looks tweaked.

Well, the dude turned out to be a freaking idiot.

The box overall was in okay condition. None of the drawers except for the bottom one were bent. And turned out the slider on the bottom one was just destroyed making it hang funny. He for some reason didnt shut any of the drawers all the way which made it look a little wonky in the pic.

He said two years ago he gave 2500 for it and it was in the same condition, not greasy the paint was trashed. And he knew if he sat on it hed get 1500. Also, and this was when I walked away, he said it was worth more than my offer in scrap metal. I offered 800, box weighs 700lbs. At 11$ per 100lbs thats 77 dollars. I tried to tell him if he knew a place where steel was worth a dollar a pound Id pay him to tell me where it was..

Anyways the search continues. Thanks for the info guys.

For the most part when someone tries to get high market value and cant even be bothered to fix or clean what they're selling that often is the case. Only occasionally you'll get someone reasonable.
