thanks for all the feedback. Still debating on what to get. Main thing I know is I need a lot of metric tools for the truck.

WHats peoples experience with Power Torque? Now mind you Im not a mechanic just a hobbyist so abuse on them will be minor compared to others. Reason for the question is purely for my discount. (no I cannot discuss what my discount is)

Let me know

(sorry for not being on here in forever)

Is there employee discount confidential information?

I've never been in an O'Riellys as there are none near me, but I do have a Performance Tool 3/8" ratchet that I purchased over 10 yrs ago and think is quite nice. I don't recall what I paid for it, but if the new Power Torque tools are the same as the Performance Tool line then is should be a decent tool for the home mechanic.

There are so many different tool brands in this lower-mid price range that it's really hard to determine if one is really significantly better than another for the money spent. If the tool looks nice, and feels nice, and you can get it for a decent price go ahead and buy it.

A lot of GJers make a big deal about warranty, but for a non-pro I don't think it's worth worrying about. I've said this numerous time before, I'm 65 yrs old and can probably count on one hand the actual number of tools that I've broken in my lifetime in NON-ABUSE situations. If you are a non-pro mechanic and don't abuse your tools, they should last for years. And, for the rare tool that does fail, ya chuck in the trash and go buy a replacement. It's a lot more fun to have an excuse to buy a new (and maybe better tool) than screw around trying to get a free replacement!!

I got a ton of Powerbuilt stuff while Oreillys was clearancing them out. I got a great deal on the stuff- typically 50% off.

I've used some of the stuff, but not all. I do like most of their Tiawan stuff.

Another brand to add that is the same line as the others I mentioned before was the Masterhand brand TSC used to sell before all their tools went Chinese a couple years ago.

One of the reasons they may have went with a house brand is for warranty- when they sold Powerbuilt, so did Pep Boys and CARQUEST. So they probably wanted their own brand to know it actually came from them- around the same time Pep Boys changed to Gearhead.

In your basement...seriously, go look now!
I went ahead and bought some integrated Torx sockets (I call them integrated because they're a single unit, not a bit in a socket) from Power Torque and man, are they nice! They haven't seen much abuse yet but what I've put them through is enough for me to declare them excellent and a steal at $16.99.

OR advertises here on NYC radio, yet there isn't a store probably within a couple hundred miles of here. LOL. When I brought that to their attention, they said, "well you can order online from us".......

That means they are coming sometime soon. There is no Menards or Meijer nearby but they advertise on TV and radio . They are opening new stores within the year. Haven't even broke ground yet. Just purchased the land.

I thought the same thing. So many outlets for hand tools seem to be selling their own proprietary brand now.

FWIW, I've conducted an informal test of both the Powerbuilt and GM Performance Parts brands of their 1/2" drive, 19mm, 12 pt. sockets. As some of you may know the crankshaft/harmonic balancer bolt on Hondas and Acuras is usually very difficult to remove. On separate occasions I've used these sockets to crack loose that balancer bolt without any issue to the sockets. I was using a 4 ft. cheater pipe (1 1/4" I.D.) for leverage. I was half expecting them to break or crack but they held up just fine. Anyway, I felt that if they can hold up to that stress, they should be fine for most any home mechanic use. Professional use might be different but for the shadetree mechanic like I am they seem okay. For the record, my old USA Craftsman, old USA built Husky and Proto sockets also passed this "test."

Another tough bolt is the 22mm crankshaft bolt on some Toyotas. That GM Performance Parts socket came through just fine. I expect that the Power Torque brand is the same quality as the other two from what I can see so considering the price and discount you are getting, I think it's a good value for you. I can't speak to the quality of their ratchets and flat wrenches since I don't have any experience with them.

They've been advertising on NYC radio since about 2008. LOL.

Power Torque

I use this brand as well as sell them. I work at a different auto parts store called Parts City. They were trademarked back around 2011, by O'Reillys in Springfield Missouri. I have never had a problem from any of my Power Torque tool. They offer a lifetime warranty and will replace on site.

Will your Parts City warranty?? They're just a privately franchised O'Reilly (the O'Reilly truck hits mine each morning after the corporate O'Reilly) and some owners are very fickle.
