I have an 18v impact driver that has given lots of good service over the years. Lately I have noticed that it goes to hammer mode almost immediately. It used to drive the screw in drill mode for almost the entire length before switching to hammer.

Has anyone repaired a driver that exhibits similar symptoms?

Got an old 18V Makita BTD140 impact driver getting weak / slower while driving long screws. Have not had a chance to open it up yet, but I assume the weakness is from worn brushes since it survived a couple remodeling jobs last year. A bigger reason for having little incentive to open it up right away is because I have another Makita impact driver and picked up a few M18 Fuels 2763/2654 earlier this year.

Interested to hear whats causing your impact driver issues

I don't think it's Batteries, Makitas have good batteries. I also agree that it's the brushe. They shouldn't be too hard to get or replace.

Same issue with my Milwaukee 18- volt , 1/2" impact. New brushes fixed her up. If your batteries are good along with serviceable brushes suspect the motor.
