Impact Gun Lubrication?

I am buying a 1/2" Ingersoll Rand impact gun today either new or used. How do you lubricate it and what oil do you use? What do you think about this device?

just about any kind of oil works. motor oil, three in one oil, anything is better than nothing. I have a bottle of marvel mystery air tool oil that I've been using for a few years. seems to work as well as anything, but certainly not a necessity.

Renewable Lube Air Tool Oil This quart will last forever. Typically you can get 10% off if your employer has an account with them & sometimes no tax that way too.

I have that oiler from Tru-Flo. It works fine for me so far.

HF has CRC lube IIRC it's around $2 for a jug.It comes in the clear plastic container.

I got this the other day from a local tool store; it has a special type of flip up dispenser that works perfect for the air tool inlet. This size should last a long time!

I used to do a drop or 2 before I started work, but I got this oiler back in January at the recommendation of some guys on here. I'm very happy with it. I keep it on a short (I think 12") lead hose so that it's close enough to the tool so that the oil is still suspended in the airstream by the time it gets to the tool, but I still have a flexible hose coming off of the tool.

Why not just screw it directly into the impact (fitting actually & then impact) & then start the flex hose?

Two reasons:

1. This lets me use it for multiple tools very easily.

2. I find the extra length it adds to the tool, especially being rigid, to be quite the nuisance. Sometimes, those few inches of clearance are critical, especially on an air ratchet. Admittedly it's not as much of an issue on an impact wrench, but I have run into situations where it's still an inconvenience. For example, when working on a lower lugnut, the "higher" the wrench is overall, including any fittings, oilers, etc., the more of an angle need to hold the wrench at to get it to clear the ground.

I started using Schrader-Bridgeport / Amflo air tool oil. ( #1220-1 ). It comes in a 16 oz flip squirt bottle.
....For piston & rotary type air tools. Claims to dissolve gums and sludges that rob tools of speed and power. Directions : Squirt a few drops in air inlet before start of day & several times a day for frequent and prolonged use.

husky/cambell hausfeld oil is my favorite.

Why? Convenient bottle that doesn't make a big mess! Its like 2$, the bottle lasts forever. The Husky bottle is black, the CH bottle is white.

Morey's heavy duty oil stabilizer. Its like honey and it doesn't go away

I would not recommend anything with the consistency of honey being put into an air tool. Most air tool oil is a light oil like #10. Thicker oils can cause vane to stick. Best practice if you do not have an auto oiler is to put a couple drops of oil in the inlet of the tools and run for a second at the end of each day.

Once every 6 months I run a lil brake clean through my guns to clean the **** out of it. Then 6 drops of the universal syntec trans fluid we use at work about 3x a week. Works fine for me and my top of the line $350 snap on air rachet I bought in 2001 is still going strong and will rip your fingers off or smash ya hands if you aint careful....

What type of lub. My first air gun I dont know

I use the same synthetic compressor oil I use in the compressor. Have run tools stored in a shop at 0*F to over 100*F no problem. I ordered a case of it & since the compressor only holds approx 40 oz I have enough to last a while.

Im not sure on what elastomers are in the gun, but the brake clean is non chlorinated. My boss always buy it. I have no idea either whats the difference between chlorinated and non in brake clean, but its never hurt my guns what I used.

Whatever brake clean I can find goes in to clean it out. I work in a transmission shop so the guns get a lot of **** in it. Hence why I use the brake clean to clean them out every once in a while. And oil 3x week.

Lately, I have been using "Redline ATF", no real differece to any other ATF, just had some leftover in a jug from a ****** flush...ATF works great, and as stated earlier, cheap...

No one has mentioned greasing the hammers(the fitting in the front of the gun), also a must for impacts not to be done as often as oilin, but still necessary.
