you can buy a whole set of brand new bits from VIM for about $8 bucks.

I'm glad you said this, I found the 8 piece impact bit set for $5 and some change through my usual retail spot. These will work perfectly in my Craftsman hand impact!

I have both the snap on and a matco the matco I seem to grab more seems to grab better

I use the Matco one almost everyday. Stoughton dry van trailer light housings with phillips head screws are the prime victim.

I destroyed two imports before I found a USA made Bluepoint on eBay for less then $10. If I ever need another one it will be a USA Craftsmen or lisle, New or NOS.

My first impact screwdriver I bought at a motorcycle show, from one of those vendors with a booth there. It was missing a piece that rode in the spiral groove, so it never worked, and of course my receipt was just a generic one with a company name scrawled on it. I now have the Lisle one, I've used it a few times, but it's always loosened the screw.

I've got a Proto that works very well.

I've been able to use an impact gun in place of it a few times, but I still like to have the hand tools.

They are great for taking the steel screws out of aluminum door and window casings in commercial buildings. The HF one will work fine for that, but anything like rotor screws needs a better tool. As far as using them with sockets, put a nut inside the socket so the socket bottoms out before it reaches the bottom of the bolt head you are trying to loosen. This means some of the downward impact reaches the bolt as well as the twisting impact.

bought mine some 40 years ago for motorcycle case screws. Haven't used it much since but it's one of those tools that isn't used often but nothing else will do the job.

I had an so set from the 70s. Not used much but worth every cent when I needed it. A few years ago I found a small version at hf and bought it. Once I put some grease in it, it worked perfectly the times I needed it. But I think hf no longer has it. Sad.

I have one of those 3/8 dr units that came in the blue metal box. Bought 40 years ago. I've seen it recently but no idea where it is right now.

Also have this 1/2 dr by OTC

I've used both these units but I don't use them often. Really like my OTC tools.

I originally bought one from hf that was utterly useless. Had a rubber grip that would slip all the time and go over where you were hammer. Took it off because I was sick of it, after that couldn't get a grip on it.

Don't waste your money on the hf one. I promise it's awful, I was sweating trying to get those rotor screws off.

Stepped on the snappy truck, he told me 400 bucks I said no way.

Got a craftsman one that works wonders. Only about 10 dollars more than hf. Someone here said it was lisle made, and has never failed me.

After losing a couple brand name impact screwdrivers, I settled for the home depot one (HUSKY). It has decent weight to it so it does the job. I do however stick with premium impact bits. I got a set of matco bits its around ($2.5-$3 ea) where I warranty them out when half of my set is all twisted or broken.

I got a 1/2" Craftsman I found at a garage sale for $5... I found an old 3/8" at another sale for $2.50. I don't recall the brand of that one though.

They do have their place. I'm typically lazy and will try my cordless impact driver first with a quick trigger pull, and if that doesn't work then I'll dig out the hand impact so I don't strip out the head of the fastener.
