Hi everyone

Took a scotch pad to some sockets today that were rusted out..looks like finish came off and now they’re grey..any ideas if it matters or not? Should I just coat it with some oil and call it a day?

Thanks
Chris

A light oiling will do wonders.

I see you're in Middletown. I live in Orange County as well.

No! The finish on impacts is a conversion coating, a form of oxidation. You can’t replicate it easily, but you can create a new, slightly less durable conversion coating using products like Oxpho Cold Bluing or Caswell.

Because it’s a chemical reaction, I find heat helps. Clean and degrease, soak in the cold blue, take it out and hit it with a torch. Even the flame from a candle will help deepen the reaction. You can repeat the process with diminishing effect. Then tap water rinse, dry thoroughly, and oil and wax or fluid film or whatever your favorite protection is.

Have nothing to say about this issue but how the hell do you grow oranges in Upstate New York. I can grow them here in Phoenix in my backyard but Orange County in Upstate New York. Citrus likes hot weather and you sure as hell don't have it.

Sure seems like the finish doesn't matter. Edit: but yes, oil, if rust is the concern.

Orange County was officially established on November 1, 1683 when the Province of New York was divided into twelve counties. Each of these was named to honor a member of the British royal family, and Orange County took its name from the Prince of Orange, who subsequently became King William III of England. (This from Wikipedia)

The finish on impacts is black oxide. If they rust, you can rub them with steel wool and oil and bring it back. That is the traditional method of blueing.
