I am looking to get a starter impact socket set. Does anyone have any suggestions? This set would just be for home use not looking for the higher end sets. Prefer USA made but willing to look at import sockets.

Craftsman was about the cheapest you could get as far as new USA made. There was a recent blowout sale on the Industrial line, full 1/2", 3/8" and 1/4" set for $130. They are all gone though.

You might get lucky and find a set on eBay.

Anything above Craftsman starts to get really expensive IMO. Not worth it.

You can get Craftsman for $3-4/socket on sale often. They discontinued the USA made ones a few months back, but you can still find some on shelves.

Impact sockets are something you can skimp on as cheap ones still hold up well. But if USA-made is a requirement for you (like it was me), Cman is your best bet. My suggestion on that is to look for larger sets on Sears.com that don't sell as well as the smaller sets. Read reviews, they often will tell you if people are receiving USA or import tools. If nothing else, buy them and pray. You can always return them pretty easily.

I've been pretty happy with the duralast set I have. They run around $20 a set iirc.

If you are going with home uses. You might just want to get 3/8 drive to start with. USA made will be pricey. And most of the taiwan made ones are excellent quality.

You can get armstrong set, made in the USA. Or as mention before taiwan made, Chicago Pneumatic they are the same quality as other taiwan made brands like sunex and gray pneumatic.

You will be better off cash wise as you will need both SAE and Metric sizes. And then you can decide weather you need shallow and deep sockets.

I have 2 sets of Ingersoll rands (imports) that I've been beating the snot out of for 6-7 years without even 1 of them breaking, Damn wish I could remember who I bought them from in the red metal boxes. Nothing fancy just black oxide finish.

Northern Tool has pretty complete sets for ~ $75, metric and standard. I have a 1/2" metric shallow set that I got from them for $20 (10-27mm), good quality. Sunex or Grey or Craftsman are better however. Harbor Freight has some decent ones as well as I understand.

and quite a few unknown brands.

after a while when the finish wears off, they all end up looking the same

many of them over 25 years old, i can count on one hand the ones that have been replaced.
all of them impact wobbles

Get the junk chicom set from harbor freight. I bought two sets years ago when they were on sale for $10 a set, and the damned things lasted me a couple years in a shop environment. I was very surprised.

the HF pittsburg form couple years ago were made in taiwan like theit pittsburg pro. They are about the same quality as gray and sunex. Not junk. One of the few not junk items they sell.

If you really want US made (that are likely to remain US made for warranty replacements if needed), SK and Wright are good choices. Won't be cheap though. Given the advice of other posters, it might be good to just go ahead and get the imports.

I honestly wouldn't spend truck brand prices, or even SK prices on a home set. Like everyone else has said, pretty much all of the taiwan made store brand sockets will suit you well.
