Hi I have recently purchased some used snap on 1/2 deep impact sockets that have wear on the 1/2 drive end. Should I remove these sharp burrs? Or just leave them?

It’s a reasonable point, but if I file off the burrs have I invalidated any potential future warranty claim as the socket has been modified?

If they're bought used you aren't trchnically able to warranty them. You might sneak them by but I'd just make them safe to use and cross that bridge when you come to it.

keep filing to a minimum and wear and tear probably hide any real evidence of it .
Due to fact you not original owner you got no warranty anyway technically .
I never buy truck impact sockets as cheaper and easier/quicker self warranty decent design cr-v taiwan sets .

Thanks to all for the replies. I realise the warranty maybe an issue as they were not purchased new direct or via an authorised seller. I was more interested in you thoughts regarding strength and the fact that deburring removes the black coating and actually looks worse than than leaving the burrs should I want to sell them further down the line.

I file mine down as needed. You aren't taking off enough metal to affect strength and as you use them you will find that the fastener end will become shiny metal with no coating. In a humid climate spraying them with gun oil or wiping them down with air tool oil or something like that will keep rust issues away. When the drive end becomes worn enough that the socket won't stay on the impact, or the fastener end starts rounding out, get them warrantied. Snap On impact sockets have a lifetime warranty that includes wear.

I just use them. I have Snap On impact sockets that are approaching 25 years old and used professionally and the burr on the drive end hasn’t ever even once cut me. Then again my hands aren’t made of ***** meat because I pick up a hammer more than once a year. :):spit:

I had that happen to a couple of my Proto impact sockets. I took a 1/2 round jewelers file to them. No more burrs.

Remember, you push a file; never pull it. :soapbox:

The only socket I've had to debur was a Wright 1/2 Dr shallow 12 pt 7/8" chrome socket. I got it in a lot of random stuff and first time using it, cut me pretty bad because of a spot of gnarly chrome peel I hadn't noticed.

I smoothed it down on a belt sander and no more ouchies, of course this after I dug a bunch of chrome flakes out of the cut and superglued it shut, then fetched socket from other side of shop where I had chucked it.

I wouldn't mess with the worn areas simply because, you're not likely to touch the female square drive area when attaching or removing a 1/2 drive deep impact socket to an impact wrench or other drive tool unless you're ********* your sockets. :bounce:

Now if your OCD is so severe that you want flawless & perfect sockets, that's a different issue all together. I find hard to believe that a snap on socket would have signs of wear on it. :wtf:
