Re: Impact sockets for the Dyer

Copies do work. I don't know about others, but I tell every customer that I sell something to that they need to photocopy their receipts and staple the copy the the original. Get a manila file folder and keep all your receipts for your records. If a store doesn't take the faded original and a copy that is stapled to the original, I would show my ***.

i find this policy incredibly stupid. They should either give the tools a lifetime no questions asked no hassel warranty or dont. Expecting everyone to have a filing cabinet filled with HF tool receipts and a photo copy, for not if but when the original fades, is asinine.

Not that i own a ton of HF tools [actually just magnetic parts bowls] but to me that warranty is essentially worthless.

I agree, I keep the receipt and if it fails before it fades I return it. If it fails after it fades I figured I came out ahead by getting away with some cheap stuff and I go buy something of higher quality.

To be honest, I've only had to return stuff when it's broken right away or even before I start using it. The few HF hand tools I have have been awesome. I have a torx set and a hex set that have been thru hell in back and the tips look unused. And for about $7/set, they were worth every penny.

As much as people rag on Sears they truly do have an awesome warranty. You're buying that hand tool forever. The only Sears stuff I've ever warrantied has been cosmetic, and didn't effect the usage of the tool what so ever. I used my 3/8" 13mm so much you could not longer read the "13mm" stamped on it.

Is that a new policy? The past few weeks I've warrantied 3 or 4 things (granted I buy a TON of tools from HF) without a receipt and nobody hassled me.

Well, have you noticed that almost every brand of tools says "lifetime warranty?" The difference is how you're able to use the warranty.

I've noticed cheap/no-name tool brands that say "lifetime warranty" but have no info on how to exercise your rights to the warranty or even a number to call to find out.

Well, that's a reason to no longer buy from HF!! The only place that I can think of that sells Pittsburg tools is HF but then since they won't warranty their tools that advertize that they have a lifetime warranty, without a receipt.

Cliffnotes from the present thread:
  • not a new policy
  • corporate is now forcing the stores to enforce the old policy

If harbor freight requires a receipt then they should provide ones that won't fade. I'm just going to bring in a blank receipt that has faded. Maybe ask for a warranty on the receipt that faded also. I liked HF for some things but with the recent price increases and all the policy changes or enforcing old policy it's going to be real hard to buy anything from there anymore. I just bought a transmission jack from them today and really liked it. I understand the theory behind what they are doing but I think it's a stupid policy. It's a lifetime warranty, someone originally bought the tool along with the lifetime warranty. Even if the warranty states original purchaser what difference does it make, the original purchaser paid for the tool and warranty. Even if the original purchaser sells the tool what difference does it make if the original purchaser warranties it or the person that he sold it to warranties it? None.

I bought Craftsman deepwells. When I bought them, I caught them on sale, used a coupon code and got free shipping. It basically worked out to getting one set for free when you bought the other.

Now I want to buy a 3/8" drive impact.

I have a variety of brands of impact sockets. Some are well respected brands Proto, Craftsman, Wright, etc, others are cheaper Stanley, Master Mechanic, Popular Mechanics, Sunnex, etc...

The only impact sockets I have experienced any problems with have been the "Pittsburgh" sockets from Harbor Freight. I bought a 1/2" drive deep metric set (Taiwan) a few years ago for home use that were absolute junk. The 17, 18, and 19mm sockets cracked under very light stress. After that I stopped using the the rest of them. The nearest H.F. is close to an hour each way for me so not worth the trouble to take them back.

Those looks like the CR-V "impacts". Technically CR-V is not what you'd use on an impact socket since its hard. Instead of deforming it just snaps. I dont think they carry those anymore but you want impacts that are chrome molybdenum
