Impact sockets with an air Ratchet?

I just bought the Ingersoll Rand 2317g kit from Lowes the other day. I had to get a tire off of a 79 Bronco and my old impact wrench just couldn't get the lug nuts off. The new Ingersoll Rand had no problem what so ever. Great Tool set. So far my only complaint is that the manuals are a joke. What a wast of paper.

Anyway my question is this. The Air ratchet that came with the kit stated that you should use impact sockets with the ratchet. Is that really necessary? Why couldn't I use regular sockets with the air ratchet?

There's a risk of regular (CR-V) sockets cracking and exploding under impact use. Not likely if only done occasionally and on good-shape sockets, but it can happen.

Impact sockets are made of softer metal (so to speak) that deforms slightly under pressure and doesn't break. As Dan mentioned, lawyers are involved so the warnings go up.

So yes, for the 1/2" drive impact gun, I suggest real impact sockets.

For the 3/8" unit you can get by with std chrome sockets unless used daily or in a production type aspect.

I use Craftsman chrome with my air ratchet, when they wear out I swap them for new ones under their warranty.

Personally I can't stand 3/8" air ratchets, I got myself a quiet 1/4" one and it's back in business. Love it.
