Forgive me if there is already a thread like this but would someone mind explaining why you need a set of chrome and impact sockets? Why can you not just get the impact sockets and forget about the chrome?

I did this for my 1/2" setup for years but eventually I picked up a 1/2" chrome setup because I kept running into situations where there was not enough clearance, the impact sockets were just too big to fit it tight situations.

I definatly have more 1/2" impact sockets than chrome. 1/2" is usually under car work and I would normally grab my impact wrench first. But as kts mentioned sometimes you need a chrome to get into a tight spot. I have found that there are a few alluminum wheels that you need a thinner walled chrome socket to remove a lug nut.

As mentioned, chrome has thinner walls for tight spaces, doesn't rust as easily (though periodic wipe-downs can cut that dramatically on impacts) and are more often available in 12 pt configuration.

The HF Pittsburgh Pro impact sets are really bang for the buck.
