Looks like Tekton is gearing up to release their 3/8th impact swivels this week:

From the chat support this morning (10/28/2024 @ 11AM EST):

$240 for the combo SAE/Metric set.
$240? For that? Why does it appear that Tekton is overpriced.

Eh.

Icon (lower total socket count) about the same price (upcoming Black Friday Sale not included):

Astro ($121) is cheaper but has a much lower socket count:

Sunex ($164) is the same, lower socket count:

Hahah, nevermind.

Now that you can see the documentation on them, makes me wonder if they come from the same source Astro gets theirs (the walls of the drive side look a little thinner in the pictures).
Negative, I was at the factory this week.
Though it does look like they will be getting some extra flex angle out of their design with a thinner neck and taller overall build which should be a nice benefit for people who need more angle. Excited to see them, when we entered the space the next closest pinless was double per piece what we decided to charge, so this is actually a great sign to see.

If size range/number of sockets is a draw back for many, it's an easy solution. We've been cooking up a set that goes larger, hadn't considered also going smaller such as 8mm and 9mm added. Haven't seen too many 8mm's that needed a lot of ugga duggas but can be convinced otherwise.

Bigger is definitely a thing. I bought the Gearwrench 3 piece X core (84976) for the 24 to get load leveling brackets mounted to crate engines when we get them in. I hate them because GW X core blows, but I still wanted them because I didn't want a collar and I didn't want to spend tool truck money,

I use my 1/4" drive sunex 8mm impact sockets on my hand ratchets because I don't like how the chrome ones swivel. I wouldn't mind the astro set going down to 8 for one less drive size to possibly need.

I hate to admit it, but I have a set of impacts from HF that I use in my home shop. I have had them for 30+ years and they are still in good shape. I am not sure I would recommend them for everyday shop use, but they are cheap enough, $25, that if you have to replace them every few years it isn't a huge deal. or $179 for a set from Williams!

There’s no reason to drop down to an 8 let alone an absolutely useless 9. But a 21, 22 and a 24 are a must imo.

I bought a 1/2 Gearwrench set from 8mm to 36mm no skips. Very much overkill and there’s likely a few in there I’ll never use but for like $120 or whatever I paid it was worth it to never worry about having the right size (deep) impact socket again.

I don’t know if the newer GW sockets are only laser etched. Mine have a small etch but also have sizes rolled into the socket too. I probably wouldn’t get them if it was just lasered.

Do the flex type impacts work ..........Ive never owned or needed one...........I d think they would rob impact force ............anyhoo,if I was just starting, and needed max tools for min $s ,then I d get some no name ones for a coupla bucks ......my impact sockets are 1970s no name asian,a few Koken for dozer track bolts ,and a mix of Consolidated Pneumatic and Ingersoll Rand up to 3. 1/4 "................some of the CP sockets would take a hit from a RPG ,they are that thick wall.

Hi I am getting into the automotive field and am trying to decide what impact sockets I should get right now I’m between sunex and gray pneumatic is one better then the other or are they the same and is there any other brand I should consider
IMO unless you are a purist...sunex is perfect.

Based on this thread, I've decided to reach out to Tekton and start a warranty claim. We'll see if they'll stand behind their product.

I'll report back what they say for the sake of this topic. I have a ton of Tekton tools, but I have never tried to warranty anything (Never had a reason too), so we'll see what happens. . . fingers crossed.

Cr-Mo is THEORETICALLY better for impact sockets than Cr-V. That being said, I have impact sockets in both, and neither have given me any problems, but I'm just DIY.

Hindsight 20/20- I would have not gone Tekton. I think the new ones are better than the ones I bought 3 years ago. It's not the sockets itself, they're fine. But the etching that fades off causing you play that game, "What size is this." Why they weren't stamped is totally beyond me. Like I said, if I had to do it all over again, I'd get the Pittsburg. Cause based on the money I spent for these, it pretty unimpressed. 💯

Hey, Dave with Tekton here.
The newer versions are roll-stamped on the opposing side of the socket from the laser-etched mark. It's just a matter of preference. I think the laser-etching is a little easier to read, but when the socket gets "dry" it can get pretty faint. If you oil the sockets and wipe them down, they will usually brighten back up.

If you have any sockets that are the older style and can't be read, let us know and we can replace them for you.
