As far as i know its just a preference of name, kind like socket wrench and ratchet both are the same. But there are 2 types on impact swivels like posted above. Pinned and pin less, i prefer the pin less type kinda works like a cv joint and can take much more punishment that the pinned type. i love my matco ones witch are the same as these craftsman posted above.

Go pinless they don't bind up on you and much stronger. I have both and the CM pined don't seem to bind up either never used it. Buy them from the catalog in a 2 piece set much cheaper buy 50%.

+1 on pinless. I only have a pinned one and it is a piece of ****. I never even use it anymore because it always kinks up at certain angles, err... Just picked me up impact wobble extension sets last night, will have to get a pinless ujoint soon too.

+2 on the pinless. By going with a dedicated swivel socket impact, you have better flexability in certain spots and is slightly shorter in overall length. Plus if you run locking extensions, you have less chance of it flying off if it comes out of position. Do reccommend using a light oil every once and a while to the swivel as it can accumulate debris in the pivot area.

+3 on the pinless,Matco came out with the pinless design in 2004.Matco even tested it and lasts 7 times more.Problem with the pin design is the pin can break and do damage to the user's hand.I have had a couple do this, pin broke and luckily no harm to my hand.

I don't worry about pin breakage so much. Instead, the pin type does seem to wear, creating slack. Slack absorbs impacts, so you get less power at the socket. Similar to stacking a bunch of extensions, all the slack adds up.

Had that with a proto 1" swivel, the pin holes were so worn and wallowed out that the impact became much less effective.

Anyone tried the HF swivel impact sockets?

I would be interested in hearing about those as well. I noticed the huge difference in price and thought about at least trying the HF swivel sockets to at least see how they hold up to a hobbyist's usage. :)

I do have some quality universal (aka, flex) sockets in 3/8dr and 1/2dr, but haven't really used them enough to give a qualified critique.
