I was reading a thread here last night saying that someone needed 4 minutes with an air impact gun to loosen a nut.

I usually try my impact for 15 or 30 seconds, and if it doesn't come loose I assume it ain't gonna, then I try something else.

Will long term impact gun use on a stubborn nut eventually loosen it?

My tools make my living, i dont have time to sit and hammer for 5 minutes with an impact gun. I either get a bigger one, or socket and a big bar.

If my impact doesn't start to move it in about 15 seconds I usually go the other way then back again. If that doesn't move it I bring out the heat and that almost always brings it off.

Holding down the trigger doesn't do any good. The breakaway power comes in the first few seconds. Cycling the trigger on and off in short spurts is much more effectiive than holding it down forever.
