Is there a way I could replace the socket ring retainer on a IR2135TI we have at work? The sockets don't stay on anymore.:headscrat

The retaining ring is available separately, but if the end of the square drive is broken, you need to replace the anvil.

If I could ask.
How do you guys replace that ring? I need to replace one of mine, but it looks like a hand stabbing job!

remove the worn ring

usually a small screwdriver or pick will work.

they usually have a small oring under the steel ring, make sure it's there

lay the ring down on a hard, sturdy surface
push the anvil down onto the ring
i usally have to "wobble" the anvil around until the ring walks itself into the groove.

I had to replace this on my Snap On IM31. IIRC, I opened the metal ring up a bit with snap ring pliers. Once opened up, I think I pried it off the anvil with my pocket screwdriver. Underneath the metal ring is a rubber o-ring. This is what actually provides the tension to keep the socket on the anvil. My o-ring was pretty much gone.

I went to the tool room, rummaged around in the o-ring bin until I found something that looked like a suitable replacement. I put the new o-ring on the anvil, put the metal clip back on, and used pliers to squash the metal clip back into place. I had to be careful to make sure I didn't squish the rubber o-ring out of the gap in the metal clip, and I had to make sure the metal clip was semi-round once reinstalled.

After I finished this, say 5 minutes total, all my sockets stayed on MUCH better. :)

The kit contains an oring and the clip. Check and clean the groove. Place the oring on carefully. The metal clip can be tricky. Do not use tools on it. Place it flat on a hard solid surface. Push the anvil down onto it. Using apick, push the clip into the groovr.

Any other way can stretch the clip and it will hang up on sockets. Also avoid using crhome sockets like craftsmans. Their detent grabs the clip.

Chewy,
Typically if the rings keep catching and coming off or have little tension, the groove edges are mashed and swaged over a bit by that time. Use a thin miniature file to clean the groove up before replacing the o-ring and clip.
If the drive square corners are worn as well then it is best to order a complete new anvil as it (usually comes with ring installed). A worn anvil will batter your sockets up pretty quickly and they aren't hard to replace.
Make sure you are using sockets that have a deep enough female square wall so they don't catch.
As others have said, to install clip just roll the gun into it on a hard surface.

I happen to have needed one on my 3/8 impact last Friday. My dealer let me take home his pliers that come from the company that makes the O ring and snap ring kits. You use the pliers to take off and replace the ring and then the inside of the handle is used to crimp it together. It also has a groove cleaner attached to the side of the pliers.

I don't have a camera here at work but will try to find out the company name.

Edit: They look like these:

But I'm not sure as the pliers don't have a name on them.

very easy to replace, take old one off with a pick, install new oring, find you a good tire on a truck or car, put the ring on the end of the anvil, then push the gun into the tire and it will po on without any distortion of the ring, and the rings I use can be bought off snap on in packs, the brand name is just clips

I had one busted, I called IR, they gave me the location of a local air tool repair shop (Vama Co, was the name of it). the guy at the counter sold me the ring for a buck and show to put it on in 2 seconds.

Yeah, it's frustrating to use an impact wrench without retainer ring.

Snap-on, Mac tools or Matco tool truck have ones for sure. But those are not available to you, you can find them online.

Each pack has 3 o-rings and 3 metal clips. They also have the tools to replace rings.

I bought the Just Clips kit a few weeks ago to repair the hog ring on my M12 3/8" impact ... works great! Just having the kit and knowing I can fix the hog ring on both my impacts any time ... priceless!
