Improved Range Bench

The last trip out in the wilderness I brought a flimsy 4-legged plastic table. The result was pretty sloppy groups. In effort to tighten things up, a real bench was the plan for some of the improvement.

I found some stuff online, it was expensive and I think I can improve on the design. So here goes. The plan is to loss a leg and go 3 legged, make the legs adjustable. This should provide level on uneven ground (without adding a brick or block). This would also make it more comfortable for tall and short folks. The rest is just adding mass I am hoping that it will weigh 80-ish pounds, 1.5” of ply for the top.

I considered some type of screw apparatus to adjust the legs. This seemed complicated. The next thought was something with pins like a pull pin on a trailer jack. This would get me close, but it seemed like there was a better idea. I decided that a cam clamp with square tube would work best to keep it quick and portable.

Cheers

It is pretty quick to get level with about 8" of leg adjustment. I had to shim the clamps with extra washers to get the proper action out of them. Some new longer bolts with rubber feet should fix this issue. Stained the top and a clear coat seal.

I bought these plans years ago and It has been a great bench.

Not the lightest thing, but super sturdy.

Real nice! I need to make something over the winter as my plastic picnic table gave up the ghost.

Since I shoot on my place, something with wheels I can tow out back with my ATV would be nice.
