Impulse Purchase.

Ok, so those that know me in real life know I am a little impulsive...

I got a little bit of OT over the last pay period. Not intentionally, work just happened. So, I figured I would reward myself. I impulse bought some tools.

Gearwrech 6pt mid length sockets. They seem to one of the only games in town for mid lengths? Only other manufacturer I could find was Mac, and those cost dearly, and more than I could currently justify. Also, this is a nice set by most accounts.

...and Wera Kraftform Chisel Drivers. Screwdrivers with striking caps. Because I wanted something from Wera, because I really like what I see from them. These looked brute.

Marco,snapon and sk(1/4 drive) all make semi deeps. Even crapsman did at one time. I use semi deeps 99% of the time now.

I was in a tool store and I got the chance to handle those wera screwdrivers; Wow glad I never bought them worst feel in my hands, I just hated using them. I am sure most guys will love them but not me!

The GW were the ones I could find on Amazon. I know Snappy makes semi deep impacts...didn't know about standard sockets. They would be out of my budget right now anyway. Same would be said of Matco. The SK might not have been.

I've heard good enough things about the GW though. There is a Fastenal close to home if I have to warranty anything. And the Wera looks good to me and gets pretty great feedback too. Also...striking caps. Sooo many times having to smack a fastener has been the trick to cracking it loose.

"Worst impulse buy ever?" as inI dared to willingly purchase Asian made tools and considered them a good option.

They arrive Friday.

I HIGHLY doubt that. I alone have had terrible impulse buys many times over, and I'm sure I'm not at the very bottom of the pile!

Always nice to treat yourself after a little OT.

I have the Wera chisel drivers and am happy with them. I find myself reaching for them more often than my standard drivers. I like the hefty feel they have in the hand.

Yes, but not in chrome or 1/4 inch drive.

Sunex is your best buy in semi deep 3/8 drive metric impact sockets for two reasons. First, Sunex includes 21 and 22 mm semi deep sockets in their set. No one else does that. Second, Sunex actually stamps the socket size into the steel instead of using laser etching only.

Gearwrench makes some sweet Chrome Semi deep or mid length sockets though. You would be hard pressed to find a better finished socket inside and out. The knurling on the metric socket base is outstanding for finger spinning and socket removal from drive tools.

I think you spent your OT money wisely!! I like the Wera chisel drivers too.

For myself, pictures save time in not having to click any hyperlink -- if I like what I see and am interested in the product, then I'll click a link or google the product, else, I usually ignore links on a quick perusal of the GJ forum.

If you work in tight spaces (like an engine bay) they can be. Sometimes the deep is too deep, and the shallow is too shallow

The semi-deeps are a great buy that I think you will find very useful. I carry semi-deep 1/4" and 3/8" drive sockets in my tool bag and they cover 99% of my needs. They are a good compromise, instead of carrying shallows and deeps I just carry one set.

Everything looks good out of the box. I like the feel of the Wera drivers...I think they thought that design through pretty well. Might not fit everyone. Seems pretty nice to me.

The GW sockets are pretty darned clean in terms of finish. Can't complain for the price.

One of my worst ever tool impulse buys was a used snap on transmission machine. Had it for 6 months, was afraid to use it. I think I paid $1200 for it, ended up trading it back in on some used tools and luckily got my money back.
