I am looking at a Stanley/Vidmar cabinet that is 44" H x 29" W x 33" D (actually looks more like 29" D and 33" W, but...). No visual signs of age or usage. I just wanted to get the forums opinion on what price would be considered a good deal/go get it dummy price? It is very reasonable compared to alot of others I have seen on CL. I appreciate any and all feedback.
Thanks,
Scott

Under 300 would be a steal, 300-500 is a go-get-it, 500-700 would be what they often go for, 700-900 would be what they sometimes go for, but not really a deal.

It's probably 30" wide, and just under 28" deep. The common heights are 30" and 60". That one's kind of a one-and-a-half-er.

In all honesty, it is going for $425. I thought about offering an even $400. My main concern is lugging it back to my home. I have no idea what the weight of one of these is? Would I need a tow motor to move it about without the drawers, or is this manageable with 2 people?

Jack, your feedback is always appreciated. Thank you.

Scott

P.S. I drive an 08 Tacoma short bed (appx. 5' x 5').

Two guys can move it pretty easily. It's probably no more than 400 lbs. But you take the drawers out to make it lighter -- then it's just a sheet metal box. If you have a dolly of some kind, it'll make it even easier. (I've always moved them by myself with a creaky CJ7 with a compression-challenged straight six.)

44" is another common height, which that one is. I got a 44" (they call them counter height) myself a couple weeks ago.

It's over 400 lbs empty, still pretty easy w/2 guys. Unloaded myself w/the help of my lift.

boosteddsm92, do you know the true dimensions on your 44" cabinet?

Check page 3 here. I can also give you some measurements of mine when I get home if you don't find what you're looking for there.

Boxes like this are neither fish nor fowl in terms of demand from your typical tool box buyer so I would guess they are more difficult to sell, hence cheaper.

I bought two of the regular cube shaped ones for $500 but they were pretty well used.

I would say street "retail" is usually about $100 per drawer. A deal is $50 a drawer or less.

A local seller (SoCal) has some that are refurbished (spray painted), a 12 drawer for $690, that I am mulling over.

I've moved them by myself with all the drawers out on a hand truck so it can be done.

SRX, what's interesting is that that cabinet is listed in two different locations, with significant price difference in the listings.

So, I drove down to look at the cabinet and met a really nice guy. After chatting for a bit, he showed me the cabinet. It is a little scuffed here and there, but nothing major. The lower drawer pull is a bit bent on the left side; I can probably straighten it out with minimum effort. All in all, exactly what I was expecting. I paid for it and we loaded it in the truck face up. Slid the drawers back in, and headed back home.

Bull....you are so right....these things are very addictive. I am already planning how many I can fit against a wall in the basement :bounce:.

I am very glad that you got this.

There is no turning back now. Anything less than an industrial cabinet and you will feel like you are being cheated. Your Craftsman boxes will feel like something to wrap your leftovers in....

That is the truth. The quality of these is amazing. They are built like a tank compared to my Craftsman, make more sense storage wise, and I totally feel like I got something worth my money.

I ordered a bag of 50 plastic drawer caps for my Vidmar chest. I'm going to have quite a few left over (50 was the only size). If you need some I might be able to shoot a few your way as it looks your missing th caps as well.

They are the newer style, need a bit of finagling but look good once they are on.

It won't be the last one you'll buy! Be diligent searching- the deals do come up.
I got 2 Listas 60h x 48 w x 28 d for $325- ea from an industrial liquidator. At
a sealed bid auction at the local Air Force base they had 2 Vidmars 60h x 60w x 28d together as a lot because they had some cosmetic damage. I put in a bid of $225 for the pair & wound up getting them! The deals are out there.
When you get used to them, you'll never want an over priced Snap On or Mac
box.

It's only last month that I finally kicked the Craftsman stack out of the garage. Now I've got a mix of Strong Hold, Lyon, Vidmar, Equipto and Lista. Bull and the others are right; it's hard to take anything else very seriously after you use these. I don't think I could ever bring myself to pay retail for them, but as second-hand finds they're really great.

$400 was a very good deal. Congratulations.

It must be the size, but the reply would not allow me to attach this pic.

@ brianpgriset - I do appreciate the offer. There were 9 end caps that came with the cabinet, as well as alot of dividers. I guess I can do 4 1/2 drawers. I am not sure if I will use them or not yet. I am considering a paint scheme and will have to see if they fit in or stick out. Thank you, I will definitely keep them in mind.

I do have a question regarding the locking mechanism. The previous owner's son attempted to break into the lock and did a good job of mucking it up. I have a key and will be ordering another from S/V. I see how the cam sits into the square opening in the rear of the cabinet, but was wondering if the slotted end of the bar is broken on mine or if it just sits in the back of the lock. To clarify, is the lock itself attached to the bar or does the flat tab on the bar just sit into the back of the lock? Mine is obviously not attached.

@ jdsac and Jack Olsen - It's weird to admit, but I am really blown away by the build of the Vidmars. It's completely silly, but the first thing I thought of when I woke this morning was to go to the shed and look at the cabinet over a cup of coffee.

The shaft for your lock assembly has been broken; I can see part of it still inside the back of the lock. See that pin that goes through the tail of the lock? It goes through a hole in the end of that shaft; it need to be driven out. I have gotten that far in mine, but have not yet actually removed the lock from the cabinet. There is some arcane process that someone posted on here and I need to try it out.

Thanks Bull! I guess I will hold off on a lock for the time being. I am planning on lagging it to the wall, so fingers crossed, no accidents.
