I have 1200sq feet with 4 loops. I just got everything installed and turned on for the first time. I’m also using the hydro smart120 boiler which so far I’m happy with. My question is what is an ideal output temperature? Pump speeds and hom settings on the floor valves?

Thanks

Talk to the guys at HydroSmart, thats what I did with mine, very similar to your setup, they'll help with suggestions to get you in the ballpark.

Congrats MX on getting your slab heat up and running. I am right there with ya. Just turned my system on for the first time myself a few days ago after 2 winters of delays. Let me tell ya - it's been a long road to get here - lol. One delay after another. If it isn't a financial issue, it's been a health issue or a spare time/family issue - which all seem to revolve around each other these days - haha.

I keep reading that anything over 140 F can cause damage to the concrete. I also keep reading that a slab temp of around 70 F will provide an average ambient temp of 60 - 65. This is the range I'm shooting for. Just this morning I reached my goal of a 20 degree temp difference between water going into and out of the slab. Either way, the slab felt great on my bare feet when I walked into the shop today.

Best of luck on your new system. Be sure to post back here once you have your temps and flows worked out. Always like to hear from others who are at the same stage as me in this hydronic journey - lol.

We never put more then 125 degree water into concrete slab. 180 for wood floors. If you have a out door rest hooked up it will adjust your out put temp accordingly.

You basically run the lowest temperature that is required to maintain room temp, which will give the best boiler efficiency & lowest operating cost.

Flow rates depend on the tube size & length of each loop.

I've always been able to maintain building temp with 85 deg water, so I never implemented the outdoor reset feature.

I’m not sure the hydrosmart120 can run with outdoor reset.

What controls the modulation ? Do you just pick a output temp ?

Ideally you want constant circulation with the lowest water temp -- better modern pumps are very low power consumption so having them running is not a problem.

With low water temp you get the highest efficiencies out of a condensing boiler.

I'm sure the manufacturer will give you the starting point ..... actual operation is always dependent on the structures insulation and the transfer -- that's a factor of piping amount.

Radiant is very forgiving. It's very common to hear "I did this and it works great" .. that's because you can mess things up and it still works.

A system using higher temp water being piped through a slab with minimal tubing may work about the same as a system using cooler water going to lots of tubing in a slab -- but the later system is going to use less fuel and have the best chance at max comfort w/o overheating.

It's simple math .... what does the building need (this is building size and insulation) based on outside temp. The boiler just makes hot water and the heat transfer is all about how much tubing is in the slab. It's the same as copper fin-tube baseboard needing higher temps than a panel radiator ... more tubing allows more transfer at a lower temp.

It's possible to use more fuel raising and lowering the temp in many systems as the water output has to be too high and the boiler drops efficiency ..
