We are getting ready to build a new house and I am going to be building a new shop at the same time. I am still debating on the metal vs stick frame. The shop will be 40x60x14. I am trying to decide if i should go with "In floor" radiant or go with infrared tube heating? The garage will be fully insulated. I live in southeast Tn. In the winter we do occasionally get down to the single digits. I would like to keep the shop around 45-50 all the time and then go up when I'm out there working. Sometimes I may be out there everyday for a week but other times only on the weekends. I understand that if I use "in floor" that I may need to have a secondary heat source to get it up to temp when I'm out there. My main concern is what is going to be the most efficient to keep the shop at the 45-50 degree temp daily?

Go with radiant floor htg and turn it up,the nite before you are going out there to work.
Based on your needs there's no reason to have 2 separate heat sources.
In my opinion there are no justified reasons to have 2 heat sources , but I know your going to get people advising you to do it.

I have floor heat in my basement shop, for 30 years now. I also added a big 2 car garage and extended the floor heat to that. Warm floors are nice. Basically, if your feet stay warm, you can be comfortable with a low air temperature. The colder it gets out, the warmer the floor. My father installed radiant heating in his ceiling 55 years ago, copper coils above the plaster. it worked well, but while sitting at the kitchen table for example, your legs and feet got cold. I used a minisplit a/c unit for summer cooling when necessary. they are efficient and not hard to install.
