Im looking to install a hoist in a 24'x36' pole barn that I'm in the process of buying. I want to install a 2 post hoist so Ive been going back and forth between a used Rotary smartlift inground and your standard column 2 post above ground hoist. I'm leaning towards the inground as it allows more "free" room in the barn. I know how to install a standard 2 post but has anyone installed an inground cassette style hoist before?

My main questions are these: How would you install an inground hoist in an already poured slab? Is it as simple as cut out a section of concrete and dig a hole to fit the cassette into? How does it get its support?

You can download Rotary's manual from their website. For a new install, they recommend blocking out for the lift and placing the slab around the lift first. They suggest using the slab to support the lift while you infill the slab.

I don't see any reason why you couldn't cut a hole in your slab and accomplish the same result. You'd just want to dowel the existing slab to the infill.

The main issue might be the soils under your slab. If they aren't stable or if you hit water, it will be difficult to excavate without undermining the surrounding slab.

You'll also need to get a 2" conduit from the lift to the pump/control unit location.

The lift itself has anchors built into the steel frame at the top of the cartridge that connect it to the slab, which is thickened and reinforced to provide support. The fiberglass cartridge itself is just to contain the lift mechanism.

You can see a Rotary install starting on page 39 of my thread. I pre-built a concrete pit and installed the lift before the slab but it will give you a sense of how much digging you'll have to do.
