In need of a larger compressor

I have a speedaire 5hp 30 gal tank I think? Won't keep up with die grinder of my soda blaster. Sounds like I need 8 cfm at around 100 psi for sand blasting. Don't want to spend a ton of money, any you guys can recommend that will work for me and not break the bank? If I need a 220 volt how hard is wiring going to be?

You have sufficient HP, if in fact a true 5 hp, but a smallish tank.

To see if "true 5 hp", look at nameplate of motor.

Should be about 20 Amp minimum, maybe 22 or so, AT 230v.

If you don't want to wait for pump up refill time, , you need a 60- 80 gallon tank.

Need 2x #10 for hots, no neutral, also need ground.

If you have a TRUE real live 5hp, you should already have the 220/ 30 amp ckt.

If you need to upgrade your circuit, "How hard wiring " depends on where your panel is.

Most economical all said and done "10/ 2 + Grnd" "NMB "Romex" cable.

Purchase by the foot at local Big Box.

For a small sandblaster, to totally "Keep up", you need 20 cfm minimum.

For full blown "keep up", for a small home shop blaster, like 25 cfm wich will mean 7.5 hp minimum for like $2.5k plus for new roughly.

"Keep up" is not at alllll necessary unless you are doing it like literally every day.

I have a pressure pot small like 60 lb hopper/ sand capacity blaster, and 18 cfm ran it fine for like a BBQ or smaller trailer, or car frame.

Put a $50 portable cooling fan onto it, and did spend a little time for "catch up", but not bad at allll for infrequent blaster use.

Totally sufficient.

But too small for bigger jobs done frequently.

Is your current compressor running 120v or 240v? If it's only 120v then it's not a real 5HP, not even close. If it's 240v you should check the circuit size before proceeding any further.

Typically the 3HP / 60 Gallon single stage compressors put out around 10-12 CFM @ 90 PSI, and the real 5HP will put out 14-18 CFM @ 90 PSI depending if it is a single or two stage.

As someone else mentioned for a 5HP you would need a 30 Amp circuit, which for most people is using 10/2 romex (available at any big box store, not that expensive). A 3HP setup you can run 12/2 on a 20 Amp circuit.

Well there is no 'getting around it'.....this will cost you some money if you want to grind and sand blast. Not an inexpensive process.

EOC Jason has the right numbers. You need a 30A circuit @ 120V, or 15A circuit @ 240V.

I have been a "hawk" for a long time and all I ever see is big rusty piles of junk and little compressors from HF and HD for sale above the store price. I keep looking but have no expectation of finding one there. A decent 5 hp single phase 240 on a 60 or 80 gal tank would last about a nanosecond and most people that sell them don't have to bother with CL because somebody they know will grab it.

TSC often has the 60 gallon 3.5HP Porter Cable on sale for a little under $400 during holiday events (i.e. Memorial Day is just around the corner!) Not the best compressor out there but probably the cheapest that I know sans CL finds...

Lowes + coupon code might be your second best bet...
