Looking at the Toro 60V and the Ryobi 40V mostly. Toro is tried and true brand, a little more expensive, batteries are quite a bit more. But I am okay paying for quality.

Ryobi 40V has good reviews, batteries are a little cheaper, but I don’t have any experience wit Ryobi.

Both mowers would be self propelled models.

If you have any experience please let me know.

I have the Makita XML02 which was their original X2 mower released in the states.

I like it but primarily because I already had the batteries and because it is so light and was the perfect second mower to have running at our old property with some steep areas.

If I had bought it as my only battery OPE or had decided on an entire battery platform because of it I think I'd be slightly disappointed. Now that I have them I wouldn't want to be without my Makita blower, trimmers or chainsaw but the mower is just okay, I guess.

It is not self propelled like the ones you're looking at.

But I got it with two batteries, a dual charger and a free angle grinder for around $300 so I can't complain. Will likely try to use it as our only mower at the new house. I don't care for summer so being able to cut the grass a bit later at night will be nice.

I just got the eGo 21” self propelled a month or so ago. I really, really like. It came with a 7.5 AH battery that will mow my lawn at least twice before needing to be charged....I haven’t tried going for a 3rd cutting on a charge yet but I would not be surprised if it made it.

I came from a Honda HRX217 that was about 12 years old and getting really hard to start. No regrets.

I just bought the Makita XML08PT1 It came with 4 batteries and dual charger. Home Depot has them for $699.00. I have so many Makita tools that it kind of made sense for the new mower. My other mower was a Honda and it was the best mower I ever had. Gave it to my son when we moved.

I have only used the Makita twice on a brand new lawn, but it seems to do a great job. I am gone a lot and with the way fuel eats everything up I decided to try the Makita.

Thanks everybody so far. I run all Milwaukee stuff and have been waiting patiently however I can’t wait any longer. I really think the Toro would be a nice unit but the $279 dollar second battery if needed price is a bit much.

Mowing is only one where I don't think battery can match, unless you have small yard, easy golf course or light grass and level ground .. I have all the Milwaukee OPE and my honda gas mower. My honda chops tall, heavy, thick grass no problem, up and down slopes, self propel, tons of power and with ethanol free gas, starts on first pull after 6 months of gas in tank.. Love that

I agree. I just sold my Husqvarna gas mower yesterday so I am defiantly committed, I never liked that mower anyways :). I have a smaller yard. But still will be pushing the range I think.

How big is your yard? Have you thought about the Husqvarna robot mower? Obviously much more expensive, but when you factor in the time you spend mowing it could be worth to you.

Check out the new dewalt 2 x 20v (40v) self propelled mower. It comes with 2 x 10 ah batteries so if you ever decide you need another dewalt tool in the future (you know, because Milwaukee doesn't make everything) you'll already be set!

The Husqvarna unit is supposed to be decent. They have a few models that can handle an acre or more and are 4wd.

I've thought about it, but a $3000 mower would take years to pay for itself, provided that it worked perfectly.

Even if you normally hired a once a week mowing, it'd take 3 or 4 years to pay back that self propelled mower.

I don't believe it can tell if the grass is wet, there's dog or moose turds, random stuff in the yard, etc. If it's anything like the Roomba I have, it's pretty dumb.

I’ve been using a STIHL battery mower since July. Abosultely love it! I have ZERO complaints, it just does what it’s supposed to do.
Just to add. I have only 2000 sq ft of lawn. Same battery also is used for my STIHL weed eater. Usually after cutting the lawn and weed eating there are still 3 out of 4 bars onh the battery.

I’m going the Automower route. I have a big ZT that I no longer need, gonna sell that to fund the new machine.

My whole lot is less than a acre, my lane is less than half my lot, so it should be an easy task. Plus, with my solar system making tons of extra power I won’t be paying to power it.

Doesn't the mower cut until the battery is low? Or does it know where it has already mowed?

I have the Toro 60volt personal pace mower. I use it for trim work and mowing on the sides on hills on my year. I have a decent size yard so i have a good amount of trim work(30 mins). Only had it one season, but I have zero complaints and I use about 1/2 of the 6ah battery for my trim work. I like the fact that it has a steel deck. It’s basically the same thing as the gas personal pace mower. It stores easy and you flip a lever to go from bagging to mulching. I replaced a Honda self propelled mower with this and I’m extremely happy with it.

Thank you for posting. I have been trying to find someone with the Toro. We went to HomeDepot today, I wanted the Toro and the wife made a good point that the new Ryobi HP 40V came with two batteries for the same as the Toro. So I went with the Ryobi. Picked an undamaged box and went on my way. Got it home, charged the batteries and I can not get it to work. Brand new out of the box, the led light and self propel works but no balde spinning. So I don’t know what to do with that yet. Try again or just call it and go with the Toro and hope I don’t need another battery for it. I have also thought about the DeWalt as well.

Very disappointed that a $500 mower straight out of the box doesn’t work.

hmmmmm

seems to work, battery or rider.

I like my milwaukee OPE, but it can't hold a candle to the eGO stuff. MKE chainsaw is good, eGO is better. I own the milwaukee saw. I wouldn't ditch it, but if I didn't own it now I'd get the eGO saw no question.

I try to minimize my battery systems/battery count. milwaukee isn't going to put out an M18 pushmower, it'll be that new system. same with snowblowers. so I got the eGO 2 stage after I got tired pushing my super cheap single stage plug-in into the 3' tall plow berm at the end of my 100' driveway. this thing throws like a decent gas blower.

I like it so much I bought their multi-head system for a project, and that's a winner. i tilled up 300 sq ft of rocky yard, and swept up after - all on one charge. Still has 2 lights left.

Battery has never gone low so I really can’t say. It’s self propelled and goes where I steer it.
I usually use the weed eater and then put the battery in the mower and cut the grass.

We have a green works 60v mower. We mow about an acre of grass with it. It gets with it. I sold my honda self propelled push mower. That honda was a damn fine machine, but the green works does just as well. We also have the pole saw and blower. Both are awesome. My FIL is a retired landscaper. He loves our little mower. I am very impressed at how far battery technology has come in the past 10 years.

I bought a Cub Cadet CC30E electric rider at the beginning of mowing season. Did extensive research and most every review said 1 acre no problem with the 30ah lithium battery. The only way I was going electric was if I could get my approx. 1/2 acre lawn done easily with NO range issues, so I pulled the trigger.

Well, I guess my yard has a few too many obstacles because I couldn’t get close to being finished before it runs out of juice. Granted my yard is thick with no weeds, but I’m a little disappointed especially given the nearly 3k price tag. I am now looking at adding another 30ah battery to double the capacity.

Other than that, I haven’t had any issues with power output in terms of cutting.

I looked into them pretty hard last year, but I just couldn't justify pulling the trigger, even when I found a prior year model 80V mower at Lowes for $100. I already have the Kobalt 80V trimmer, chainsaw and blowers, all of which work great for my suburban lawn needs. However, I have St. Augustine grass, and I am really bad at mowing it on a schedule. Often times it is tall enough that my 10 yr old Toro gas mower bogs down, so an electric would definitely have issues, as some of my buddies have when they let their lawns grow too high.

The Kobalt stuff was made by Greenworks, but the 80V line is online only now, so the really good clearance deals may be harder to find. I think the HART stuff at Walmart is rebranded Ryobi - last year I found a couple of their 40V mowers on clearance for around $150 with batteries/charger. They might do something similar this year, but I think the jury is still out as to how long Walmart will continue to sell Hart.

If you can try one before you buy - maybe from a friend or neighbor. My brother has a very small lawn and a ryobi 40V mower. I mowed his lawn a couple of times and I hated it.

My major issue was that it didn’t have a clutch, so unless you released the safety bar the blades kept spinning at the end of a row. And if you released the safety bar it was a PITA to start it up again. And I may have missed it, but I didn’t see a way to change the self propelled speed either. It really made me long for my Honda that was 2500 miles away...

I have the new Dewalt mower and I hate the handle design. The angles of it are very uncomfortable.

I know it's another battery platform, but the Echo battery-powered yard equipment has very good reviews. See Project Farm channel on Youtube for one review.

Only been using it for a couple weeks so far, but I am liking my EGO. A buddy that mows with a ryobi thought it felt nice when briefly using it.

Power is good, adjustments are easy, cut quality and bagging are good.

I have the Ego 21" self propelled mower. I have about 2400 sq ft of flat fescue grass. I can cut it about 4 times on one charge. It seems to cut the tall stuff just fine.
I tried a neighbor's Kobalt and it was fine as well. It wasn't self propelled but it was light enough to move around.
I didn't really care about having a different battery since the Ego battery is so huge. I have all B&D cordless tools. I got the Ego because it had the best reviews. I got a $250 rebate for turning in my old gas mower.

The Makita 21" self-propelled for $700 looks pricey.
You get 4 batteries and a dual charger, all worth about $385 which I can use for other tools.
You are paying $315 for the mower itself, about the same price for a gas mower.
And get a $100 credit from our village for going electric. Hmmm...

Yup, the batteries are what get you. Gotta be careful when shopping as some *deals* only come with like one 2ah battery. What's that, 15min run time?

It's wild how expensive some of the bigger batteries are. $350 for a 7.5ah 56v EGO... Nuts. If the grass is wet and long, I need almost two full charges to do my lawn, half that for a normal mow.

When you need more batteries, its time to buy another tool in a kit

I didn't know there was a new one. The old XR dual battery push that's been out for several years is pretty good.

They designed the handle with angles and also so that the drive lever is attached to the center of the handle. The design puts your hands far apart and at an angle, which I find to be pretty uncomfortable after mowing for not very long. I really hate the handle.

I recently got one to replace the Craftsman that has been a warrior for many years (RWD w/ Honda motor and 1-handle height change - still runs great but have a wheel coming apart and the AWD mechanism is kaput).

After a ton of research, I went with the Ego that come with the 10Ah battery (top of the line). I got that one as much to get the smart/quick charger and the 5-year warranty on the battery as much as anything (the next model down with the 7.5Ah battery has the "regular" charger and a 3 year warranty on the battery - the mowers both have 5 year warranty on everything else). I'm pretty sure the mowers are the same other than those three things (battery Ah, warranty, charger).

The first mow with sorta wet and very tall grass chewed up about 70% of the battery on my 1/4" acre yard. The cut was excellent. The mower is really light, but I did use the self-propelled a fair bit due to some elevation in my yard and to power through the taller grass.

The second mow breezed by with only two bars gone (so only about 40% of the battery used), and with the shorter grass I also forgot to use the self-propelled a lot.

My third mow (and most recent) was pretty wet grass at a regular need-to-mow length, and needed about half the battery with a fair bit of self-propelled use, though I did "forget" it a few times too.

It's super-easy to change height (one handle for all) and easy to set up/store/etc. Build quality seems fine.

My one gripe is the (RWD) self-propulsion isn't a progressive speed (like my old one) - you set the speed with a wheel at the center of the bar and buttons on the grab handles activate it. I'm used to it now, and since the thing is so light I keep failing to use it in situations I definitely would have with my hold one. So a minor thing.

Overall, I'm pretty damn happy with it and would recommend it, other than it is pricey.

I eyeballed the Kobalt 80v pretty hard, since I bought the 80v trimmer and blower in anticipation of getting that mower at some point, but the reviews are very-high or kinda-middling on it, so I went with the Ego which seems to be pretty universally highly-reviewed. As it turns out, my brother-in-law has the 80v Kobalt, and he's been very pleased.

I used to have a Ryobi One+ 36v mower. I loved it but it only lasted about 6 months before the deck failed near the handle. After that, I bought a Craftsman gas mower that started leaking gas shortly after I bought it, so I returned it and got a Craftsman V20 mower. I ended up returning the V20 too because the handle was too high for me and wasnt adjustable. Now, Ive got a Fiskars reel mower.
If I hadnt gone the reel mower route, Id get a Ryobi One+ HP mower because I already have 6 Ryobi 4ah batteries. If I didnt have so many batteries, Id probably go with a Ryobi 40v mower because the 40v doesnt have the runtime limiations that the 18v does and has a lot more power.
Really though, when it comes to electric, its all what brand you like. Im a Ryobi fanboy, so Id go Ryobi but theyre all good mowers and all should be relatively trouble-free. Ive heard good things about Toro, Greenworks, Kobalt and Ego. Its all what you like and possibly what battery platform you want to get into.

That's a very common design for self propelled (Troy-Bilt, Cub Cadet, and Husqvarna come to mind). Beats the Honda thumb control!

My ego has handles like that and I find it very comfortable. Its a much more natural angle than horizontal
