I like Streamlight, but they are pricey.

All of my cars (and kids cars) have a 4AA LED Streamlight ProPolymer, but they do make a 2AA version

For even more light, get one with the C4 LED (100-150 lumens versus 20-67 lumens)

Watch out, new guy post. I have a bit larger than a pencil Steamlight Stylus in my drawer I use for looking at firearm barrels and other stuff, battery and about $20+. Great, super bright light. I just bought a Streamlight ProTac HL probably too much for what you're looking for but this thing is absoutely sweet when you need it.

I bit the bullet on the price and bought a Streamlight Stinger about two years ago. It is the rechargeable model and it has been the best flashlight I have ever owned. Bright yet small enough to stick in my pocket and not be an inconvenience when working. I throw it in its' charger station before I go home and it is charged and ready for a full day of use. I am impressed that the beam can even reach our ceilings in the warehouse which are 30' high.

I recently bought one for home as well because I have been so impressed. You will only be disappointed with the price but once you get one and use it you will be impressed.

Mike.

Headlamps are dorky looking. And a good one is $70. But now I can't believe that I ever got by without one.

(And holding a flashlight in your mouth while you work is kind of dorky looking, too -- so it evens out.)

You'll have to decide just how much brightness you need. Many of them now can be so bright that they aren't useful for close up work. I have flashlights from Surefire, Streamlight, Coast, and a few old Mag lights. The Surefires are nice but overpriced. The streamlights are ok but the two I have just feel a bit flimsy although I'm sure they'll do just fine. The mag lites are ancient technology so I won't even comment on them. My Coast HP17 is the best of the bunch. It's a larger flashlight which may or may not appeal to you. Uses 3 D cells which doesn't satisfy your rechargeable requirement but the thing gets very good life out of the batteries. Another option is to purchase rechargeable NiMH D cells and go that route. I do think it's a bit big for simply trying to look at things in an engine bay etc... but if you want to check in on your neighbor a quarter of a mile away, you can do it with this thing! I haven't seen many rechargeable flashlights with the latest C4 LED lamps although I'm guessing they're out there. Many use the CR123A batteries which are not cheap ($10/2 ea at Walmart!) and I have found they don't last long generally. In fact, one of my streamlights arrived with batteries and within 5 minutes of use, the batteries were dead.

Next time I'm in the market, I do plan to look at the Coast ones first. The one I have is very well made and they do offer an awful lot of different lights.

with rechargeable I would go with batteries that are low discharge. Since this is a toolbox, it may stay in the box a long time before needing to use it. I would get a good LED flashlight, AA or D cell and put the sanyo eneloop in or sony low discharge in. They make adapter to use the AA into a D cell flash lights as well. They will last 2 years before you need to recharge them.

A cheap an easy way to get bright led light, as you already have 2AA maglight and 3D mag light. Just go to HD or Lowes and get the led bulds for them. For about 6-8 dollars for the bulds. You greatly increase your light form your existing flash lights.

Now if you want to pay big dollars, there are some in the over 100 dollar range. The tactical lights are great. Surefire are very nice.

Almost every firefighter I work with carries at least 2 either streamlights or pelican lights. That should tell you something about their ruggedness. I've had mine in more structures fires than I can count and it hasn't melted and still works great. Plus they both have EXCELLENT customer service. After pelican began making led lights I had a problem with my old little Ed light, I sent it into them(in a postage paid box they shipped to me) and I got a brand new light 4 days later, and it was an led light which my original wasn't, completely free of charge. And every one of the 150+ fire engines in my department carries two streamlights. They are great! Neither brand will let you down.

If you are considering the headlamp route, Zebralight makes truly excellent lights. I have a few small lights from iTP, Fenix, and Pelican and they all fit my needs and the quality seems ok. I use Sanyo Eneloop rechargeable batteries and have had no issues.

Streamlight Polytac - about $32 on Amazon. If you are still in the Maglite world, you will be amazed - about 10X the light of an old 3D and slightly bigger than the old minimag. Uses 123 batteries - not sure if you can find rechargeables or not. Very rugged plastic body.

Pelican 2360 - about the same - $32 or so. Same size as the old Mini Mags. Runs on AA's. Amazing light output - puts out more light than the polytac above, but run time is shorter. Aluminum case is not quite as rugged as the poly case.

I am a huge fan of Fenix flashlights. I have a mix of models (LD10, E20, E21), but all run on AA's so I don't have to keep exotic batteries around. For rechargeability, you'd just need to source some nice rechargeable AA's and you'd be all set.

+1 on the exotic batteries. Not going to find 123 very easily in parts of the world. With a regular AA running on a set of good rechargeable you have the best of both. If you can not charge them, just get a set of regular AA batteries or Li ion AA till you can get to a power source.

I use a Surefire for just about everything. It goes with me when I travel, camp or go anywhere. I use it in the Shop quite a bit bu it is a little heavy and you can not hold it in your mouth without losing parts of your teeth!

I also use a Headlamp in the shop as well as travel, camping and basically anywhere. These are from REI and they are great...

Although both of these run on Batteries, 2-123's for the Surefire and 3-AAA's for the Tikka XP2, you can still find good rechargeable Batteries to run them off of. The newer LiFePO4's is what I would use...

CR123's...

AAA's...

Another Streamlight Strion LED rechargeable user here. Great light, long run time and BRIGHT. I also have Surefire and other Streamlights (including the new 350 lumen Stinger) but for all around use, the Strion is the best I have used.

I have a Surefire and a Fenix. I think the Fenix is my favorite. I can't remember the model number but its small light. It puts out more light than my Surefire and I think the beam pattern is a little better. It has 3 modes and the high is usually bright enough but the turbo mode is amazingly bright.

Horses for courses....I like Maglights. If I need a flashlight usually I am going somewhere where I may also want a club - Maglight. I use LED bulbs and have 4, 5, and 6 D-cell versions....they last YEARS behind the seats of my vehicles through hot and cold weather.

+1-2-3 on the Fenix with rechargeable batteries. I've got an LD20 for about 2 years and love it. Gave E25's for Christmas with great reviews.

My Doctor recently saw my LD20 in my back pocket and had to show me his new LD10. He was digging how bright it was and things he could see he had been missing. I thought he sounded like a kid with a new toy.

Ebay has a ton of Fenix flashlights listed.

I love my headlamps. I just buy the Petzl Tikka 2 or similar. $40 - $50. . .AAA batteries. So bright and hands free. Don't know how I ever lived without them. Keep them in glove boxes, tooll boxes, camping gear. . .they are great.

I agree with the comments here about headlamps. I too resisted them for a long time due to the **** factor. But once it tried one, I was hooked. Imagine, light exactly where you want it!! Without having to find a light switch or hold a flashlight. What a concept! Almost wants me want to get rid of all the lamps in my house and only use a headlamp.

If I was single, I might actually do that.

I own Streamlight Strion and I like almost everything about except for battery, it's proprietary and each cost 25$.

The bad thing about streamlight is that you can NOT charge multiple batteries at once, IIRC.

Get flashlight with 18650 size battery. It's cheap on deal extreme or eBay

I like my Streamlight Stinger with piggyback charger. So there is always a battery ready. Only thing I hate is how quickly it drains the battery. My "go-to" flashlight is actually a DeWalt one that uses the same 12v Lithium Ion battery as my cordless impact and drill. It's bright and has a strong magnet for hands free operation. I use it everyday. I also own a Streamlight Stylus and Stylus Pro.

A Streamlite Stinger LED is tough to beat for a durable all around light. I don't like head llights but have found the LED lights that clip on to the bill of a ball cap indespensible! I have an Energizer model that I got at Wally World several years ago that has been used hard fishing at the Outer Banks (think wet salt spray). Whats nice about the clip on models is you can adjust the angle of the light and they are comfortable!

The volunteer dept I'm on bought me one of these.

http://www.galls.com/cgi/CGBCSTYL?PMSTYL=FL599

This is what I carry on my turnout gear on my regular job. It has seen alot of abuse but it takes batteries.
http://www.galls.com/cgi/CGBCSTYL?PMSTYL=FL023

The engines have atleast two of these. They are rechargeable and you can replace the batteries. The battery is the same that is used in emergency back up lights found in almost every public building inthe US. You can buy them at hardware or electrical stores.
http://www.galls.com/cgi/CGBCSTYL?PMSTYL=FL540

The head flips up/pivots and rotates. These take alot of abuse but might be a bit large for what you need. The best thing is the light can be pointed in almost any direction and left hands free.

Yes Pelican and Streamlight have a good name with the fire service.

I got a Fenix LD22 and I like it because it's relatively small and extremely bright. It runs on AA batteries which I prefer because my company provides me with limitless free batteries.

I use a snap on LED that came in a combo with my electric driver, its held up for 2 years being used most the day 5 days a week. Uses the same battery as my electric impact driver so its easy to rotate the batteries. They might not be the best but has held up well and is pretty bright for $30.

I have to agree that the headlamps are the way to go if you are using it while needing to use both hands.

Of the brands mentioned, I'll have to say that the Surefire is tops and the Fenix is right there with them.
