Hey. I have an existing stick frame shop I’m wanting to get a large CNC mill into. My doorway into the shop is virtually the same exact height as the CNC, which is too close for comfort. So i’m wanting to replace the double door entry with a taller one.

Below is an early pic of the construction. Any thoughts on whether I could cut out the 2x4 right under the 2x8 header? This would gain me at least 1-1/2”. The current inside concrete to doorway clearance is 81”.

Yes you certainly could. Sawzall the 2x4 flush to the inboard side of the cripple and leave the 1-1/2" block in place. Add some screws and blocking low down to hold the 2x8s together if needed.

Or could you just pull the door and frame out, bring the mill in and reinstall as before...?

if it was me, I would probably leave the doors , cut the head of the jambs off. make it removeable so you can easily remove it of needed. will a 7' door & frame fit if you cut out the 2x4?
