Indestro Super rat snap ring help!

I picked up this Indestro Super 3/8 ratchet no. 2775 at an estate sale- frozen.
It freed up some with a penetrating oil soak, but still didn't really work. I went to disassemble it but one of the tangs on the snap ring had rusted away. I pulled it out, breaking off the other tang in the process, sort of unwound it with the aid of long-nose Vise-Grips and a little hammer, and on inspection I think it will be a useful rat with a little more de-rusting.
Now, the snap ring - can anyone point me to a source for a new one? Or maybe some kind soul has a spare they'd part with??
It looks very similar in size and shape to many other brands of RH rats, but a matching ring for something still in production would be waaaaaay too much to hope for.

Thanks!

That's a tough one! I don't know what the exact dimension to that ring is. However, I can tell you that Duro/Indestro made these ratchets for Western Auto, who sold them under their Wizard brand. The markings, the handle and shift knob are different, but the rest is identical, and the parts are interchangeable. The Wizard model is H2775. My point is that the Wizard brand is far less collectible/desirable than the Duro or Indestro, so a Wizard donor ratchet will be cheaper. There's one on eBay right now with a starting bid price of 9.99 + shipping. Item no. 233470275009. Not only will the snap ring fit your 2775, but the entire core can drop right in yours and and its individual parts are the same, so makes a great ratchet for spare parts.

Hope this helps.

^ yeah.. you could try that.... generally speaking, however, you should be able to find a used 2775 Indestro on Ebay for anywhere from a low of about $15 to a high of $30 bucks.

I've taken enough of them apart ... that snap ring isn't all that different, really.
I don't know why a snap ring from a hardware store would not work. It would be simply a matter of finding the correct size and thickness.

When I have ran into this for needing ratchet parts. I always go to the local harware store as they have thousands of bins of hardware. There is 2 types of snap rings that I have seen in ratchets. 1 has the holes where you can use a snap ring pliers. The other is sort of coil spring style with an indent in it. The second style is much more forgiving on size as you can wrap it on top of itself. They are typically thinner in profile as well.

Thanks for the tips - I'd never seen the two-tang type snap ring anywhere but on ratchets so assumed they wouldn't be available except through the toolmaker. Good to know about Wizard, but I don't know if I could bear to sacrifice a good one for the Indestro!
Guess I'll hit up TruValue Lowes and Menards, see what shakes.

Olson, There's a third type, pictured below. this is what I have, and I doubt either of the others would work even if the diameters were right.

Yep. That drawing is the one. And yes, the other styles mentioned will not work. It's a specialized snap ring because the prongs require a recess to dwell in, otherwise they would stick out and poke things. Perhaps a hardware store might have them, but I'd lean more toward an old mom-and-pop store. If you have one in your area, check out a Big-R. They put all the other chain stores to shame. I think you could build a space shuttle with the variety of hardware they stock. Just amazing.

The problem with pirating the ring from another ratchet is that the core face diameter is so wide on the Indestro design that it covers almost the entire front of the head. Most have smaller core diameters and so smaller rings. I suggested the Wizard because they are not as collectible and not as much in demand, so the prices are generally lower than a used Indestro or Duro.

Ahh. You are correct. Those were common on SKs as well.

I’m familiar with the S&K ratchets as I’ve pulled several apart for cleaning. That little retaining ring is a booger to get off and on. I thought maybe a Housing Retaining Ring -Internal could possibly work. This is the type retaining ring holding the internals of a New Britain ratchet together, which looks very similar to the S&K. I’ll try to get a picture tonight for comparison.

Edit: I was wrong about the internal snap ring working. It would have to be that wire ring like below. VVVVV

What size do you need. I have a spare or two. These are ~1" ID and 0.0630" thick.

Holy cow, Frank, you've cornered the market!
Measuring as carefully as I can, my ring is .04" thick, .05 wide, 1.15" in diameter (but that's relaxed and misshapen). The groove it fits into is .05" wide and .07 deep. The mechanism overall is 1.02" in diameter. It looks like the the groove it expands into on the ratchet body is about .02" deep - half the width of the ring.

It looks to me like your ring would fit-it should compress down to a shade under an inch - except be too thick to fit into the grooves. I'd be willing to spend some quality time with 240grit to remedy that if you'd part with one (or two just in case).

PM me if ok.

Many thanks to FrankLee for sending me several of his snap rings!
The ID and OD are perfect - the thickness is a few thou over (as his measurements indicated) but that's easily dealt with.
The rat shall rise to spin again!
