My family call it a barn because it's a pole building, but will be a detached garage. I don't plan to post from the start to finishing the inside, but wanted to share as I enjoy seeing others' posts. We moved to just east of Indy from Pittsburgh, PA 7 months ago. Have 7.25 acres of flat land. Hauled all of my junk from the previous 1600 sq. ft. garage and a detached shed. Needless to say the 3 car garage wasn't going to cut it. The building is 36' wide, 40' deep, 14' high with a 12'x40' lead-to porch on one side. There will be two 12x12 overhead doors, three 4x4 windows and a 36" man door. I opted for wainscoting and trusses every 4' OC. Also upgraded the metal to 26 gauge as I was paranoid about hail damage. I did the rough ground prep and will finish the dirt work myself. Plan on 4000 psi 5" slab with mesh and micro fiber. Almost forget, double bubble insulation just to help with the condensation. I found a reputable metal company (Man-Sea Metal, also DBA Midwestern Buildings in Kentucky) that gave me a great price on the material, sourced an independent builder (Amish) and ended up being a one-stop shopping. They even managed/prepped the builder so I didn't have to do anything. And since folks always want to know the cost (which I always do too), I will tell you that the material was $13,500 delivered, erecting is $5,520. I think it was a great price. Morton wanted $28,000 without the lean-to porch and cheaper 29 gauge metal. They also refused to place trusses every 4' OC, stated they only do 9' OC. Yeah, take a hike. The crew of 3 folks came yesterday to layout and mark where every posts went. Today was the first full build day, showed up at 8am promptly with 7 amish and 2 regular folks (running Bobcat and helping). What you see below was all done in 1 day. They will spend few more hours tomorrow to finish framing the porch and will start hanging the metal. Very nice folks, not the first time dealing with Amish as my Pittsburgh home was also built by Amish. Only downside is the BO, which I can live with for the quality of work they do. They really care about things being off 1/8", would recommend to anyone else in the area.

Indiana- where horse and buggies still roam
Hmmmm, not even 12 people standing around leaning on a shovels??? And 12 one ton trucks tearing up the yard... That can't be a construction site. :bounce:

No really, it looks great and can show what can be accomplished when people have skills and the desire to work. :D

Day 2 was a bit slow. Lost few folks to another job site, moved a bit slower, sore from yesterday I suppose. It's neat watching a 16 year old boy making sure things are nuts on. They don't like it when a girt is 1/8" off. They said they may come back tomorrow which I think is not typical to work on weekends, but they are a bit behind. One side of the roof has the double bubble insulation and metal on. The rafters for the porch took longer than expected. Watching the 17 year old boy hand nailing joist hangers, I went to HD tonight and picked up a palm nailer to give to them as a gift tomorrow. They have a gas run air compressor. BTW, they have some huge flies in Indiana, those by the windows were over 1 inch long!

Taking longer than we all had expected. The windows the kit company provided were the worst I've seen. They wouldn't even open/close right. I had them take them off and got Andersons from HD. They are crediting me back. They said it should be done tomorrow. I guess I need to line up some fill dirt and a skid steer for the weekend.

Today was suppose to be the last day, but they couldn't as some pieces of trim were missing, will come back later next week to finish. I came home all excited to check things out, but I got mad quickly. It looks like they just rushed through at the end of the day as they were there 2 hours past their normal quitting time. Here are some of the issues:
-Z flashing for wainscoting was all wavy, determined it had only 1" offset where the wall ribs were 1.25" high
-Corner trims (front and back) on the porch side were not sealed at the top, left open for water to get in
-Horizontal flashing next to the above corner trims were installed to channel all rain water directly into the top opening of the corner trim
-Flashing for overhead garage doors were not long enough, had to splice, looks bad, cause water drip
-Flashing for overhead garage doors did not have enough clearance of 1.25" panel ribbing
-Amish folks too my blue rubber padding for the top of ladders
-Amish folks didn't trim and left the bottom 2x6 grade board long
-Amish folks didn't tie the 2x6 grade board to 2x8 grade board with vertical 2x4 as we agreed to
-Found a full box of unused butyl tape, leads me to wonder where they skimped
-Between 3 windows and 1 door, I observed 3 different ways they cut the window wrap corners
-Corner trim not aligned with base rat-guard trim
-Some other stuff.
I will speak with the manufacturer and the Amish. Everything can be "fixed", just annoying...

I'm also in Indiana and plan to buy a kit and pay to have it put up. Do you have the contact info for the Amish crew that built your barn, and would you recommend them after working with them on your barn?
