Hey everyone. New to the boards here.

Saw an ad on Craigslist that basically said, "Old Craftsman Bench Vise $15.00" I called immediately and setup the buy, even though there were no pictures. I love looking at pictures of old vises, but could never really justify the price. I could justify $15.00!

I wasn't disappointed. It was old, greasy, and the grease was covered in a cake of sawdust...it was perfect!

I was hoping you guys might help me with something:
It says model "5170" on the front, but I can find no evidence that a model 5170 ever existed. Would love to know things like where it was made, original cost, and current value (to make the CL buy even better).

Thanks for your help!

Great score! Your vise was made by Columbia for craftsman in the 1960s. Many people like that style of craftsman vise the lines and design make the vise really pop from the rest of vises.

That's a GREAT score for $15 for Craftsman vise with "torpedo" handle. Go through the VISE thread and you'll find others like it restored. That is definitely a KEEPER !

For your first post on GJ, that is awesome . . . . .

Movable jaw looks really sprung to me. Maybe it's just the angle the picture was taken at?

Possibly vises with U shaped slides only have the slides pressed into the moving jaw. And that can be fixed by using a press to nudge it back in place. And that is not uncommon for a older vise to need that sort of nudge.

Thanks guys! It sure is great to know that I found a gem. The slide is slightly bent, but the image does make it look worse.

I always keep an eye out at Harbor Freight for a good deal on a vise. Who knew that I'd get a great one for just $15.00.
